Auckland + Beyond: 4 Day NZ Itinerary
Four days is the 3 day plan plus Coromandel, the day trip most people underrate compared to Hobbiton and Waiheke. Day 1 is the CBD, Day 2 is Waiheke, Day 3 is the Hobbiton and Waitomo combo, Day 4 heads east to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. Book these before you go

Day 1: Central Auckland
Start at Maungawhau/Mt Eden for the free 360-degree view, the summit’s been closed to private vehicles since 2016 so it’s a short walk in from the car park either way. Walk down to Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter for lunch, then the Auckland War Memorial Museum , international adult admission $32, keeping in mind the Māori and Pacific galleries have been closed since May 2025 for asbestos remediation, possibly until 2029. The twice-daily cultural performance is unaffected and worth the visit on its own. Dinner on Dominion Road, Eden Noodle Café or Spicy House, over anything in the Viaduct.
Day 2: Waiheke Island
Fullers360 ferry from the Downtown Ferry Terminal, 40 minutes each way, off-peak return $46.50 (after 1pm departure), not on the AT HOP network so budget it separately. Pick two vineyards near Oneroa rather than a coach tour dragging you through five, Te Motu and Batch Winery both do lunch without needing a car. The Estate and Mudbrick, both on the island, picked up One Star in NZ’s first Michelin Guide (30 June 2026) if you’re after the name-drop. Onetangi Beach is a proper swim, not just a photo stop.
Day 3: Hobbiton and Waitomo together
The day that tests the base concept hardest. Hobbiton is roughly 165km and 2-2.5 hours south, Waitomo’s glowworm caves another 30-40 minutes past that, close enough for a combined coach tour without doubling the drive. Hobbiton is guided-entry only regardless, the standard tour runs about 2.5 hours including a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, the cave tour itself under an hour. Expect a 12-hour day door to door, long but genuinely shorter than attempting Bay of Islands as a day trip, which this itinerary deliberately skips.
Day 4: Coromandel, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach
Roughly 175-185km and 2.5-3 hours each way, so this is a full day regardless of transport. Cathedral Cove reopened after storm damage but auto-closes during orange or red DOC weather warnings, check doc.govt.nz before you leave, not after you arrive and find the gate shut. Hot Water Beach only works within about two hours either side of low tide, when you can dig your own pool in the sand, arriving at the wrong tide means a beach with no hot water anywhere near the surface. A self-drive gives you flexibility on timing both; a guided tour is easier if you’d rather not navigate two weather-dependent stops back to back.
How many days do you actually need in Auckland and the region?
Four days is the sweet spot for a first proper trip: one city day, one Gulf island, one big inland day trip, one coastal day trip. It’s enough to prove the base concept without the fatigue of stacking three or four consecutive long-drive days, which is where 6 and 7 day plans start needing an overnight stop instead.
Is Coromandel worth it over a second day on Waiheke?
If Cathedral Cove and the tide-dependent Hot Water Beach appeal, yes, it’s a genuinely different kind of day than more vineyards. If wine and easy ferries are the priority, a second Waiheke day or a Rangitoto add-on (no food or water on the island, bring your own) is the lower-effort choice.

One concrete tip: check the Hot Water Beach tide chart before you fix Day 4’s departure time, not after. Building the day around low tide, not a fixed morning start, is what actually gets you a working sand pool.
