Auckland + Beyond: 6 Day NZ Itinerary
Six days is the 5 day plan plus a full day trip to Rotorua, the honest limit of what a single day can cover before it should really be an overnight instead. Days 1 through 5 stay the same: CBD, Waiheke, Hobbiton and Waitomo, Coromandel, Tiritiri Matangi. If Rotorua deserves more time than one long day, the 7 day plan turns it into an overnight instead.
Book these before you go
- Tiritiri Matangi ferry for Day 5, books out months ahead in peak season, sort this first.
- A Rotorua day tour from Auckland for Day 6, a coach beats self-driving both legs of a 6-7 hour round trip tired.
- A combined Hobbiton and Waitomo day tour for Day 3.
- CBD or Viaduct hotel for all six nights, compare rates on Booking.com , Dec-Feb prices spike hard.
Day 1: Central Auckland
Maungawhau/Mt Eden for the free view, vehicle-free since 2016. Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter for lunch, Auckland War Memorial Museum after, international adult admission $32, Māori and Pacific galleries closed since May 2025 (possibly to 2029) but the twice-daily cultural performance runs regardless. Dinner on Dominion Road.
Day 2: Waiheke Island
Fullers360 ferry, 40 minutes, off-peak return $46.50 after a 1pm departure, not on AT HOP. Two vineyards near Oneroa rather than a five-stop coach tour, Te Motu and Batch Winery both do lunch. The Estate and Mudbrick hold One Star in NZ’s first Michelin Guide (30 June 2026). Onetangi Beach for a real swim.
Day 3: Hobbiton and Waitomo together
Hobbiton, ~165km/2-2.5 hours south, Waitomo’s caves another 30-40 minutes on, close enough for one combined coach day. Hobbiton guided-entry only, ~2.5 hours including the Green Dragon Inn, the cave tour under an hour. A 12-hour day, but a shorter one than attempting Bay of Islands as a single day trip, which this itinerary skips deliberately.
Day 4: Coromandel, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach
175-185km, 2.5-3 hours each way. Cathedral Cove auto-closes in orange or red DOC weather warnings, check doc.govt.nz first. Hot Water Beach only works within roughly two hours either side of low tide, so build the departure time around the tide chart, not the clock.
Day 5: Tiritiri Matangi
Predator-free open bird sanctuary, ~80 minutes by ferry, Wednesday through Sunday only, roughly $62+ adult, booking out months ahead November-April. Strict biosecurity on arrival. Takahē, kōkako, and tīeke on the tracks, no driving, no tide chart, the closest thing to a rest day this trip has.
Day 6: Rotorua, the honest long day
Rotorua sits roughly 3-3.5 hours south, and this is the itinerary’s real stretch. The honest advice is that Rotorua rewards an overnight far more than a rushed day, this is genuinely where Te Puia and Whakarewarewa are, geothermal Māori cultural experiences that don’t exist anywhere in Auckland itself. If a full 6-7 hour round trip plus geothermal parks and a cultural performance in between sounds like too much crammed into daylight hours, it is, but a guided coach tour handles the driving so you’re not the one white-knuckling the return leg after dark. If you’d rather do Rotorua properly, that’s the case for the 7 day version instead.
How many days do you actually need for Auckland and the wider region?
Six days covers one city day and five distinct excursions, an island, an inland movie-set day, a coastal day, a bird sanctuary, and one long regional push. It’s a genuinely full week’s worth of ground without an overnight stop, right at the edge of what’s comfortable in single days.
Is a Rotorua day trip actually worth it, or should you skip it for a rest day?
If geothermal parks and Māori cultural experiences you can’t get in Auckland are the priority, it’s worth the long day. If you’re already tired from five days of early starts, skipping it for a slower CBD day or a second Waiheke visit is a completely reasonable call, and honestly the better one if you’re prone to burning out on trips.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost, excl. hotel |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mt Eden, Viaduct, War Memorial Museum | $50-90 NZD |
| 2 | Waiheke ferry, two vineyards, a beach | $100-180 NZD per person |
| 3 | Hobbiton + Waitomo combined day tour | $250-350 NZD per person |
| 4 | Coromandel: Cathedral Cove + Hot Water Beach | $150-250 NZD (car + fuel + food) |
| 5 | Tiritiri Matangi ferry and sanctuary walk | $70-90 NZD per person |
| 6 | Rotorua geothermal day trip | $200-320 NZD per person, guided |
One concrete tip: if Day 6 feels like too much after five days of early mornings, swap it for a slow CBD day, Rotorua on a coach tour is genuinely tiring and you’ll get more out of it fresh, on a future trip, than exhausted at the tail end of this one.
