Is there a national holiday that affects an Auckland trip?
Yes, two. Auckland Anniversary Day falls on the Monday nearest 29 January, and Waitangi Day is 6 February, a national holiday. Waitangi Day’s actual signing site is in Northland, not Auckland, a genuine mix-up worth avoiding if you’re planning to “visit where it happened” on your Auckland leg.
March: the month everything clusters
Pasifika Festival (Western Springs Park, since 1993, billed as the largest festival of its kind in the world, 200,000+ visitors, 14-15 March 2026) and the Auckland Arts Festival (5-22 March 2026, Aotea Centre/Square, Town Hall, Bruce Mason Centre) run in the same window. This is Auckland’s busiest cultural month, and hotel prices reflect it. If you want either event specifically, book your base accommodation well ahead; if you’re just passing through, expect to pay peak rates without necessarily getting festival tickets.
ASB Classic tennis, January
WTA runs 5-11 January 2026, ATP 12-17 January 2026, both at the ASB Tennis Arena. This overlaps with peak summer season already, so factor the extra crowd into any January CBD accommodation booking. Check the AT journey planner ahead of event days, since public transport gets busier around the arena.
BNZ Auckland Lantern Festival, late February/early March
Scheduled 26 Feb-1 Mar 2026 at Manukau Sports Bowl, relocated from its old Auckland Domain site in recent years. Confirm the venue before you plan around it; it’s changed location more than once.
BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival, late October/early November
31 Oct-1 Nov 2026, centred on Aotea Square, Queen Street, and Rutland Street. A genuinely large free event, worth building a short CBD stay around if the dates line up with a wider NZ trip.
Christmas in the Park
Held annually in the Auckland Domain, typically early December, though the exact 2026 date wasn’t confirmed at time of writing. Worth checking closer to your trip if a December Auckland stop is on the table.

Does an event date affect where I should stay?
Yes. March’s cluster and the Diwali weekend both push CBD and Ponsonby rates up city-wide, not just near the venue. If you’re building a regional base trip and one of these dates falls inside it, lock in accommodation early, and book a rental car too if the same dates overlap a regional day trip.
One concrete tip: if your trip dates are flexible and you don’t specifically want Pasifika or the Arts Festival, avoid mid-March in Auckland altogether. You’ll pay festival-season prices for a room with no festival plans.
