Auckland + Beyond: 7 Day NZ Itinerary
Seven days is the 6 day plan with Rotorua turned from a rushed day trip into a proper overnight, the version worth recommending over cramming it into daylight hours. Days 1 through 5 are unchanged: CBD, Waiheke, Hobbiton and Waitomo, Coromandel, Tiritiri Matangi. Shorter on time? The 2 through 5 day plans strip this same spine back.
Book these before you go
- Tiritiri Matangi ferry for Day 5, books out months ahead in peak season, sort this first.
- Rotorua accommodation for the Day 6 overnight, and a Te Puia or geothermal park tour , both fill up in summer.
- A combined Hobbiton and Waitomo day tour for Day 3.
- CBD or Viaduct hotel for the Auckland nights, compare rates on Booking.com , Dec-Feb prices spike hard.
Day 1: Central Auckland
Maungawhau/Mt Eden for the free view over the paid Sky Tower deck, vehicle-free since 2016. Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter for lunch, then the Auckland War Memorial Museum , international adult admission $32, keeping in mind the Māori and Pacific galleries have been closed since May 2025, possibly until 2029. The twice-daily cultural performance still runs. Dinner on Dominion Road.
Day 2: Waiheke Island
Fullers360 ferry, 40 minutes each way, off-peak return $46.50 after a 1pm departure, separate from AT HOP entirely. Two vineyards near Oneroa, Te Motu and Batch Winery, over a rushed five-stop coach tour. The Estate and Mudbrick hold One Star in NZ’s first Michelin Guide (30 June 2026). Onetangi Beach for a genuine swim.
Day 3: Hobbiton and Waitomo together
Hobbiton, ~165km/2-2.5 hours south, Waitomo’s glowworm caves another 30-40 minutes on, close enough for a combined coach day. Hobbiton is guided-entry only, ~2.5 hours including the Green Dragon Inn, the cave tour under an hour. A 12-hour day, shorter than attempting Bay of Islands as a single day trip, which this itinerary skips on purpose.
Day 4: Coromandel, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach
175-185km, 2.5-3 hours each way. Cathedral Cove auto-closes in orange or red DOC weather warnings, check doc.govt.nz before you leave. Hot Water Beach only works within roughly two hours either side of low tide, build the day around the tide chart.
Day 5: Tiritiri Matangi
Predator-free open bird sanctuary, ~80 minutes by ferry, Wednesday through Sunday only, roughly $62+ adult, booking out months ahead November-April. Strict biosecurity on arrival, no driving, no tide chart, the closest thing to a rest day on this trip.
Day 6: Travel to Rotorua and geothermal afternoon
This is where the 7-day plan earns its extra day over the 6-day version. Rotorua is roughly 3-3.5 hours south, drive it or take a coach transfer in the morning, then spend the afternoon at Te Puia or Whakarewarewa, the actual home of the geothermal Māori cultural experiences that don’t exist anywhere in Auckland, whatever older guides imply. Check into a Rotorua hotel for the night rather than turning around: the whole point of the extra day is not doing the round trip in one sitting. Dinner at a hangi (traditional earth-oven) experience if your accommodation or a local operator offers one, it’s a better cultural evening than anything squeezed into a rushed day-trip itinerary.
Day 7: Rotorua morning, return to Auckland, departure
Use the morning for whichever geothermal park you didn’t reach the day before, or the Redwoods Treewalk if you want something outdoors and less sulphur-heavy. Head back to Auckland by early afternoon, the drive or coach transfer runs the same 3-3.5 hours in reverse, and it’s genuinely less draining done fresh in the morning than tacked onto a long Day 6. Leave a real buffer before an international flight, at least three hours, more if you’re driving back into the city during weekday peak traffic on the Southern Motorway.
How many days do you actually need to do Auckland properly as a base?
Seven days is where the “base” framing stops being aspirational and becomes accurate: one city day, four distinct day trips, and one region, Rotorua, treated as an actual overnight instead of a rushed dash. Anything shorter means picking which region to skip; this is the version where you don’t have to.
Is the Rotorua overnight worth two days over the 6-day plan’s single long day?
Yes, if geothermal parks and a proper Māori cultural evening matter to you, the difference between a 6-7 hour round trip crammed into one day and an unhurried evening plus a fresh morning is significant. If Rotorua isn’t a priority, the 6-day plan’s single long day trip, or skipping it entirely for a slower Auckland pace, both work fine.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost, excl. hotel |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mt Eden, Viaduct, War Memorial Museum | $50-90 NZD |
| 2 | Waiheke ferry, two vineyards, a beach | $100-180 NZD per person |
| 3 | Hobbiton + Waitomo combined day tour | $250-350 NZD per person |
| 4 | Coromandel: Cathedral Cove + Hot Water Beach | $150-250 NZD (car + fuel + food) |
| 5 | Tiritiri Matangi ferry and sanctuary walk | $70-90 NZD per person |
| 6 | Travel to Rotorua, geothermal afternoon, overnight | $150-250 NZD per person plus hotel |
| 7 | Rotorua morning, return to Auckland | $50-100 NZD per person |
One concrete tip: book the Rotorua hotel before anything else on Days 6-7. Everything else on this list flexes around weather or tide, the overnight stop doesn’t, and Rotorua rooms tighten up fast around any 2026 events in the region.
