Auckland + Beyond: 5 Day NZ Itinerary

Five days is the 4 day plan plus Tiritiri Matangi, the one Gulf trip that needs advance planning more than anything else on this itinerary. Days 1 through 4 stay the same: CBD, Waiheke, Hobbiton and Waitomo, Coromandel. Day 5 swaps another road trip for a slower boat day. Push further with the 6 or 7 day plans, which add Rotorua.

Day 1: Central Auckland

Maungawhau/Mt Eden for the free 360-degree view over the paid Sky Tower deck, vehicle-free since 2016 so a short walk from the car park. Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter for lunch, then the Auckland War Memorial Museum , international adult admission $32, noting the Māori and Pacific galleries have been closed since May 2025, possibly until 2029, but the twice-daily cultural performance still runs. Dinner on Dominion Road over the Viaduct.

Day 2: Waiheke Island

Fullers360 ferry, 40 minutes each way, off-peak return $46.50 after a 1pm departure, separate from the AT HOP network entirely. Two vineyards near Oneroa, Te Motu and Batch Winery, rather than a rushed five-stop coach tour. The Estate and Mudbrick both hold One Star in NZ’s first Michelin Guide (30 June 2026) if that’s the draw. Onetangi Beach for an actual swim, not just a photo.

Day 3: Hobbiton and Waitomo together

Hobbiton, roughly 165km and 2-2.5 hours south, and Waitomo’s glowworm caves 30-40 minutes further, close enough for one combined coach tour. Hobbiton is guided-entry only, about 2.5 hours including the Green Dragon Inn, the cave tour under an hour. A 12-hour day door to door, but shorter than the mistake of trying Bay of Islands as a single-day trip.

Day 4: Coromandel, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach

175-185km, 2.5-3 hours each way. Cathedral Cove auto-closes in orange or red DOC weather warnings, check doc.govt.nz before you leave. Hot Water Beach only works within roughly two hours either side of low tide, build the day around the tide chart, not a fixed start time. Self-drive gives flexibility across both weather-dependent stops.

Day 5: Tiritiri Matangi

A predator-free open bird sanctuary about 80 minutes out by ferry, running Wednesday through Sunday only, one return sailing, roughly $62+ adult. Book this one before anything else on the trip, it books out months ahead November through April and there’s no walk-up option if you miss it. Strict biosecurity on arrival, shoes get scrubbed before you land. Expect takahē, kōkako, and tīeke on the walking tracks, birds you won’t see on the mainland at all. This is the closest thing to a rest day on the itinerary too, no driving, no tide charts, just a slow island.

How many days do you actually need for Auckland plus day trips?

Five days lets you do one city day and four genuinely different excursions without repeating a theme, a vineyard island, an inland movie-set day, a coastal day, and a quiet bird sanctuary. It’s the point where the “Auckland as base” idea stops being a slogan and starts covering real ground.

Is Tiritiri Matangi worth it over a second Waiheke day?

If birds and quiet genuinely interest you, yes, it’s unlike anything else on this list. If you’d rather have more wine and beach time, skip it for a second half-day on Waiheke or a Rangitoto add-on instead, just remember Rangitoto has no food, water, or shade on the island.

One concrete tip: book Tiritiri Matangi before you book anything else on this trip. It’s the only fixed-capacity, limited-day stop on the whole itinerary, and everything else here is flexible enough to build around it.
