6 Days From Ljubljana (No Tourist Traps)
Six days from Ljubljana is where the trip stops being a checklist of lakes and caves and adds a genuinely different landscape: the Soca Valley’s turquoise river and its rafting and canyoning scene. Day 1: Settle into Ljubljana
Land at Joze Pucnik Airport, about 26 kilometres north with no rail link at all, so it’s the Nomago public bus to the main bus station (roughly EUR 4.10 to 4.50, about 30 to 50 minutes) or a GoOpti shared shuttle from around EUR 12 a seat if booked well ahead. Ljubljana’s old town is compact, car-free and flat, so drop your bags and walk it before dinner; the castle and river embankments are covered fully in our Ljubljana city guide . Day 2: Lake Bled, then Vintgar Gorge
Bled is 45 to 55 minutes from Ljubljana by car, or about an hour on the direct Arriva bus. Go at opening; the lake swamps with tour groups by mid-morning. The pletna boat to the island church runs EUR 20 return for an adult (EUR 10 child), cash only to the boatman, plus EUR 12 to enter the church and climb the bell tower; Bled Castle on the cliff above is EUR 19. Skip the lakefront cafes for kremna rezina, EUR 7 to 9 a slice, and eat it a few streets inland for closer to EUR 4. In the afternoon, Vintgar Gorge, 4 kilometres outside Bled, runs a wooden boardwalk through the river canyon for EUR 15 adult (EUR 5 child); it’s sold in hourly timed slots as of 2026, so book at least 48 hours ahead in peak summer. Day 3: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
Postojna is about 55 kilometres southwest of Ljubljana, roughly an hour by car. The cave holds a constant 10 degrees Celsius regardless of the season, so bring a layer even in August; the standard tour by electric train and on foot runs roughly EUR 28 off-peak, rising to about EUR 31 in June through September. Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face 10 minutes further on, is EUR 24 alone, or roughly EUR 55 to 85 combined. Check the current combined pricing directly before you pay.
Day 4: Lake Bohinj
Bohinj sits about 30 kilometres past Bled, inside Triglav National Park, roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from Ljubljana by car. It’s the calmer, less-photographed version of the same Julian Alps scenery, with genuinely swimmable water and a fraction of Bled’s crowds. The Vogel cable car climbs to 1,535 metres for EUR 28 return (EUR 22 one way) for an adult, less for ages 14 to 25 and 60 plus.
Day 5: Skocjan Caves and the coast at Piran
Skocjan, about 75 kilometres southwest via the A1 toward Koper (exit Divaca), is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the more dramatic of Slovenia’s two cave systems, considerably less visited than Postojna. Tours run roughly EUR 16 to 20 off-peak and EUR 20 to 24 in summer; confirm current pricing at the official park site . Piran is a further 45 minutes to an hour of driving, for a combined day of around 120 kilometres and 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40 minutes one way from Ljubljana. Piran’s car-free Venetian-Istrian old town wraps a tight harbour; park at the Fornace garage on the edge of town (EUR 1.20 an hour, EUR 14.40 daily cap) and walk in.
Is the Soca Valley worth a full day, or can it be a stop en route?
A full day, not a stop. It’s 85 to 150 kilometres from Ljubljana depending on route, meaning 2 to 2.5 hours each way by car, and the rafting, canyoning and hiking around Bovec need actual time on site. Bolting it onto another destination in the same day just produces two rushed half-days instead of one good one.
Day 6: The Soca Valley
The Soca Valley is roughly 85 to 150 kilometres from Ljubljana depending on route, 2 to 2.5 hours by car via Tolmin and Kobarid, or longer and more scenic over the Vrsic Pass. The Soca river’s turquoise water is the draw, along with a serious whitewater rafting and canyoning scene around Bovec. This is not a quick add-on; it’s a genuine full day of driving and activity, and if a 4 to 5 hour round trip on top of rafting sounds like too much, an overnight in Bovec beats doing it all in one exhausted push.
