Ljubljana 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Two days is enough to cover Ljubljana’s actual sights properly, no rushing, no day trip squeezed in. Save Lake Bled and the caves for a dedicated Slovenia leg; if you want more city time first, our 3-day through 7-day versions add neighborhoods and architecture, not padding.

Day 1: Old town and the castle
Drop your bags in the old town or around Preseren Square, everything on this trip sits within a 15-20 minute walk of here. Start at the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), Plecnik’s 1930s reworking of a single older stone bridge into three parallel spans, then walk Preseren Square and the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The center has been car-free since 2007, so none of this involves dodging traffic.
Is the castle funicular worth EUR 6? Only if it’s raining or the heat’s brutal. The one-minute glass-walled ride runs EUR 3.30 one-way or EUR 6 return; the marked woodland path up takes 10-15 minutes and is free. Walk up for the gradually building view, then take the funicular down if your legs are done.
The castle complex ticket (Virtual Castle tour, Slovenian History exhibition, Museum of Puppetry, viewing tower) is EUR 15 adult and doesn’t include the funicular, buy the EUR 19 combined ticket if you want both. Dinner along the Ljubljanica embankments, cafe terraces fill from around 5pm on any dry evening, closes out the day.
Day 2: Market, Dragon Bridge, and Metelkova after dark
Morning belongs to the Central Market and Plecnik’s riverside colonnade, produce and craft stalls run mornings into early afternoon, Monday to Saturday. Cross the Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most, 1901, four bronze dragons) on your way toward Tivoli Park, Plecnik’s Jakopic Promenade cuts straight through it, for a slower afternoon away from the old town crowds.
Is Metelkova worth a stop on a 2-day trip? Yes, but only in the evening. By day it’s murals and closed doors; after dark the former army-barracks squat turns into the city’s actual nightlife, small clubs and LGBT-friendly bars that feel genuinely unpolished next to the tidy old town. Walking through costs nothing.
Before you go
Get an Urbana card (about EUR 2, then EUR 1.50 a ride with a 90-minute transfer) if you’ll use the bus more than once or twice; contactless card taps work but skip the transfer privilege. And don’t book a Ljubljanica boat cruise, roughly EUR 14-20 for under an hour, when a riverside coffee gets the same embankment view for a fraction of the price.
