Ljubljana 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Old town and the castle
Base yourself in the old town or around Preseren Square, everything on this trip sits within a 15-20 minute walk. Walk the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and Preseren Square with its pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The center’s been car-free since 2007.
Is the castle funicular worth EUR 6? Only if it’s raining or your legs are done. The glass-walled ride is EUR 3.30 one-way or EUR 6 return; the woodland path takes 10-15 minutes and is free. Walk up, ride down. The castle complex ticket runs EUR 15 adult, EUR 19 with the funicular included.
Day 2: Market, Dragon Bridge, and Metelkova after dark
Central Market and Plecnik’s riverside colonnade run mornings into early afternoon, Monday to Saturday; on a Friday, late March through October, stay for Odprta Kuhna. Cross the Dragon Bridge toward Tivoli Park and Plecnik’s Jakopic Promenade.
Is Metelkova worth an evening? Yes, but only after dark. By day it’s murals behind closed doors; at night it’s the city’s real nightlife, none of the old town’s polish.
Day 3: Plecnik’s architecture and a bike loop
Morning at the National and University Library (NUK) , entry about EUR 5. Walk south to Plecnik House in Trnovo, EUR 9 adult, guided tour only, hourly Tuesday-Sunday. Register for BicikeLJ (EUR 1 a week, first hour free) for the ride back, then a riverside cafe table.
Day 4: The Museum of Modern Art and the Secession-era Center
Morning at the Museum of Modern Art (MG+) , EUR 7 adult. Walk into Center, the Secession district along Miklosiceva cesta. Afternoon at the National Museum of Slovenia’s Metelkova ulica location, EUR 8 adult, free the first Sunday of the month.
Day 5: Trnovo, Krakovo, and a proper slow afternoon
Trnovo is quieter and villagey; Krakovo next door is the city’s old market-garden quarter, kitchen plots running to the river. Walk the Cathedral of St Nicholas on the way back, free, always open, then close at Movia, a wine bar in the old City Hall building pouring Primorska producers, proof Slovenia is a serious wine country.
Day 6: Bezigrad by bike and a proper food day
Take BicikeLJ north into Bezigrad, more residential and business-district than the center, to see Plecnik’s Stadium from outside the fence. Built 1925-1941 for the Orel gymnastics society, its raked seating and colonnaded stand are genuine Plecnik design, closed since 2008 and effectively abandoned since a restoration deal collapsed in 2018. It’s not a pretty stop, but it’s a more honest look at Plecnik’s legacy than the polished library or market get you, not everything he built survived.
Spend the afternoon eating properly instead of sightseeing: struklji, Slovenia’s national dish, rolled dough filled sweet or savory, at Kratochwill, Druga Violina, or the fast-casual Klobasarna. A casual lunch or main runs EUR 8-12, a sit-down dinner EUR 12-20, and a full dinner for two with wine rarely tops EUR 40-50 outside fine dining, noticeably cheaper than Vienna or Venice. One more pass through Central Market for anything you missed closes the loop on six days well spent.
Before you go
Get an Urbana card (about EUR 2, then EUR 1.50 a ride with a 90-minute transfer window) if the bus enters the plan at all. Skip the standalone Ljubljanica boat cruise, roughly EUR 14-20 for under an hour, a riverside coffee gets the same view for less.
