Ljubljana 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Old town and the castle
Base yourself in the old town or around Preseren Square; everything on this trip sits within a 15-20 minute walk. Walk the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), Plecnik’s 1930s reworking of a single older stone bridge into three parallel spans, and Preseren Square with its pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The center’s been car-free since 2007, so this is pure walking, no traffic to dodge.
Is the castle funicular worth EUR 6? Only if it’s raining or you’d rather not climb. The one-minute glass-walled ride is EUR 3.30 one-way or EUR 6 return; the marked woodland path takes 10-15 minutes and costs nothing. Walk up for the view building gradually, ride down if you’re done for the day. The castle complex ticket is EUR 15 adult, EUR 19 with the funicular bundled in.
Day 2: Market, Dragon Bridge, and Metelkova after dark
Central Market and Plecnik’s riverside colonnade run mornings into early afternoon, Monday to Saturday; if it’s a Friday between late March and October, stay for Odprta Kuhna, 65-plus food vendors on Pogacarjev square, 10am to 10pm. Cross the Dragon Bridge (1901, four bronze dragons) toward Tivoli Park, where Plecnik’s Jakopic Promenade cuts through 5 square kilometers of green space, for a quieter afternoon.
Is Metelkova worth an evening? Yes, but only after dark. By day it’s murals behind closed doors; at night the former army-barracks squat is the city’s actual nightlife, small clubs and bars with none of the old town’s polish. It’s free to walk through, and it’s the sharpest contrast to everything you saw on day one.
Day 3: Plecnik’s architecture and a bike loop
Spend the morning on Plecnik’s National and University Library (NUK) on Turjaska ulica, the facade alternates brick and stone, the interior staircase runs from near-dark to flood-lit marble. Entry to see the staircase and current exhibition is about EUR 5; guided visits run at set times, and there are no tourist visits Sundays or holidays. Walk south to Plecnik House in Trnovo, his home and studio, EUR 9 adult, guided tour only, departing on the hour Tuesday-Sunday.
Register for BicikeLJ (EUR 1 for a week, first hour of any ride free) for the afternoon and loop back along the Ljubljanica; it’s the fastest way to close the distance between Trnovo and the old town without another long walk. Close the day the way locals do: a riverside cafe table, filled from around 5pm on any dry evening.
Before you go
Get an Urbana card (about EUR 2, then EUR 1.50 a ride with a 90-minute transfer window) if the bus enters the picture at all; contactless taps work but skip the transfer perk. Skip the standalone Ljubljanica boat cruise, roughly EUR 14-20 for under an hour, a riverside coffee gets you the same view for a fraction of the price.
