Walking the Historic Centre of Manaus
Walking the historic centre of Manaus
The historic centre of Manaus is best done on foot as a self-guided circuit. It runs from the theatre square down to the river and takes a couple of hours at most, depending on how long you spend inside each building. This page lays out the route and the timing traps.
The circuit
Start at Praça São Sebastião, whose wave-pattern cobblestones are widely said to echo the Meeting of the Waters. Teatro Amazonas is the first stop, and the Igreja de São Sebastião comes next on the route. From there walk on to the Palácio Rio Negro on Avenida Sete de Setembro, then to the Palacete Provincial, which houses museums. Finish at the waterfront, where the Porto Flutuante, the floating port, sits beside the Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa. The market is next door to the port and a separate building.
Stops and opening hours
Teatro Amazonas takes visitors on guided visits only. A full ticket is R$20 and half price is R$10, and Amazonas residents, children up to 10 and people with disabilities enter free. It opens Tuesday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday and holidays 09:00 to 13:00. The Palácio Rio Negro is free, but its hours are reported differently by different sources, so check before you go. The Mercado Adolpho Lisboa is free and opens Monday to Saturday 06:00 to 18:00 and Sunday and holidays 06:00 to 12:00 according to one guide. Fish, fruit, crafts and herbs are sold there.
Best order for the day
Because the sites keep different hours, plan around Mondays and Sunday afternoons, when several are shut or close early. Tuesday to Saturday is the easiest. Go to the theatre first while it is open until 17:00, or take the market early and the palace later. On Sundays, finish the market before noon and the theatre before 13:00.
Walking comfortably
Manaus is hot and humid, so carry water and walk in the shade. Wear repellent against mosquitoes, because dengue is a risk in towns. Carry some cash for small vendors. Brazil carries a US Level 2 advisory for crime, so keep valuables out of sight and use normal city care.
What the theatre listing covers
In July 2026 Teatro Amazonas joined the UNESCO World Heritage List as Amazonia Theaters. The inscription covers the theatre, and the historic centre as a whole is not a World Heritage Site. Read more on Portal Amazônia .
