Romantic Stays and Evenings in Manaus
Romantic stays and evenings in Manaus
Manaus is a working river city rather than a resort town, so romance here comes from a lodge on the river, an evening at the opera house and a boat on the water. The choices are few, and each one is worth planning ahead.
A jungle lodge for two
The strongest romantic option is a lodge stay outside the city. Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is on the Rio Negro about 180 km from Manaus and has 22 rooms. Packages run 3 to 6 days with transfers, and an older example price is about R$2,700 per person for 3 days, so check the current rate. Juma Amazon Lodge is at Autazes, roughly 100 km away on the Juma River, with 20 bungalows and a pool filled with river water. Both are quiet, and both organise guided outings. Book a licensed guide for any excursion, and skip swimming in the river channels.
An evening at Teatro Amazonas
The opera house on Praça São Sebastião opened on 31 December 1896 and still stages performances. If a concert or opera is scheduled during your stay, an evening there is the most elegant night out in the city. Check the programme for dates, because the annual opera festival runs on its own schedule. By day the theatre is open only on guided visits, at R$20 full price, with Sunday hours from 09:00 to 13:00. The building joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2026 as part of Amazonia Theaters. Visiting details are on Portal Amazônia .
On the river at sunset
Local operators offer river cruises timed for sunset. Ask for the route, the length of the trip and the price in reais before you pay, and confirm that the guide is licensed. The Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro runs beside the sandy Solimões for roughly 6 km, is the sight most cruises aim for.
Timing your trip
River level changes the feel of a trip. Dry season, roughly August to November, means shallow channels, longer boat transfers and wide sand beaches. High water is the opposite. Check the level at Porto de Manaus before you book. Note too that the Hotel Tropical has been closed since 2019 and is being converted into a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel with no confirmed reopening date, so do not plan around it.
Health for two
Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for Amazonas, given at least 10 days before travel, and it is not required for entry to Brazil. Malaria transmission occurs across the state, so talk to a doctor about a month ahead and pack DEET or picaridin repellent. See the CDC Brazil page .
