Umrah and Hajj: What to Know First

Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca, so these are practical tips for Muslim readers preparing for Umrah or Hajj, not general tourist etiquette. Get these five things right before you go, and the trip runs far more smoothly.
The single most important step is the Nusuk permit. Every pilgrim needs one to enter the Grand Mosque, and Hajj visas only come through a government-approved operator or the Nusuk Hajj portal, with no independent route available. Alongside that, carry your MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate; it is mandatory, not optional, and there is no Hajj visa without it. Beyond the paperwork, the two things that catch people out most are the heat and the crowds, and the one rule that has genuinely changed in recent years is the mahram requirement for women.
Do women need a mahram for Hajj or Umrah now?
Saudi Arabia officially dropped the male-guardian requirement for women’s Hajj and Umrah around 2021, and that remains the rule in 2026. In practice, though, individual operators and some home-country authorities still attach their own conditions, commonly requiring women under 45 to travel within an organised group while allowing more freedom above that age. Check both the Saudi rule and your own country’s requirements before you book.

Ihram and conduct
Once in ihram, avoid perfume, cutting your hair or nails, marital relations, and hunting or quarrelling, restrictions that apply from the miqat boundary until you complete halq or taqsir. Alcohol is illegal throughout Saudi Arabia, and modest dress is expected everywhere, not just inside the Haram. Prayer times pause commerce across the city, so build that into any plan involving shops, food, or transport.
Heat and crowds
Mecca’s summer heat regularly passes 45 degrees Celsius, a genuine hazard rather than a discomfort, so hydrate constantly and use the free Zamzam and cooling stations. During Hajj, crowd density is extreme; the 2015 Mina crush killed more than 2,000 pilgrims, and the Jamarat Bridge and Mashair Metro exist because of it, so follow official crowd management instructions exactly, even when they slow you down.
