Romantic Luquillo: Sunsets and Night Kayaks
Luquillo is a relaxed beach town, not a resort destination, and its romance comes from the water, the sunsets and a few shared outings rather than spas or fine dining. A handful of experiences suit couples well, and the rest of the trip is simple beach time and kiosk dinners. This page covers what is worth planning around.
Night kayak on Laguna Grande
The best-known couples outing is a guided night kayak on the bioluminescent lagoon at Las Croabas, Fajardo, about 20 minutes’ drive from Luquillo. Tours last 1.5 to 2 hours, and listings range from about $58 to $115 per person. The glow is not guaranteed, and darker nights show it better than nights with bright moonlight. Swimming in the lagoon is not allowed.
A beach horseback ride
Carabali Rainforest Park in the Luquillo foothills offers a beach ride that resellers list at about $165. Shorter rides in the hills start at about $75 for 1 hour. Check availability and the price with the park before you commit.
Sunset by the water
Los Kioskos de Luquillo are open-air food kiosks beside Balneario La Monserrate. Most open around 11 a.m. or noon and close at 9 or 10 p.m., so you can eat at sunset and stay for the evening. Try a piña colada served in a pineapple, or order frituras and mofongo to share. Kiosk #42 is Ceviche Hut.
Boardriders, a beachfront bar and grill at Playa La Pared, is listed as another sunset spot. Check that it is open before you go.
A day on the water
Catamaran charters to Cayo Icacos leave from Fajardo marinas and list at roughly $125 to $185 per adult on reseller sites. These are snorkel charters. Cayo Icacos is reached by boat from Fajardo and not by kayak from Luquillo.
An easy beach day
Balneario La Monserrate has calm, reef-sheltered water and palm-lined sand. Parking is $4 per car, paid by card or ATH Movil. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the off-season (about September to December) and daily until 5:30 p.m. in the high season (about January to August). Playa La Pared is the surf beach, where rip currents are common, so keep swimming to the balneario.
