Multi-Day Stays for Árnafjørður Visitors
Árnafjørður is a village of about 64 people with no hotel, guesthouse or campsite, and no shop or cafe. A stay of several days around it is therefore based in Klaksvík, the main town of the Northern Isles, about 10 minutes away by car. This page lays out how to spend three days from there.
Where to sleep
Klaksvík has the beds, meals and groceries. Search stays on Booking.com for Klaksvík and check each listing for its location and what it includes. The village itself has no campsite.
Day one: Klaksvík and the village
Spend the morning in town. The Christianskirkjan was built in 1963 in an Old Norse style, and the Norðoya Fornminnissavn museum covers the northern isles. The Föroya Bjór brewery, founded in 1888, has been reported to run tours with a tasting. In the afternoon drive north on route 70 through the Árnafjarðartunnilin, a tunnel of about 1.96 km that opened in 2024, to see the church beside the Stórá river and the boat houses at the fjord head. Stop at the pull-off between the two new tunnels on your way back for the fjord view.
Day two: the hikes
Choose one walk, not both. The Klaksvík to Árnafjørður route is 5 km one way, takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, climbs 395 m and is rated difficult. The Árnafjørður to Katlarnir loop is 7 km, climbs 653 m, takes an official 2 hours 35 minutes and is also difficult. Both cross the Stórá river and fences with no gates, so carry a GPX track and stay off the hills in fog. Katlarnir was the old Thing site, and the stones are still there.
Day three: Kalsoy or the north
For Kalsoy, take the route 56 ferry from Klaksvík to Syðradalur, about 20 minutes. The ferry is small and carries about 12 cars, so book ahead and check ssl.fo for fares. Kallur Lighthouse costs DKK 200 for adults, DKK 100 for ages 13 to 17, and nothing for under 13. Bus 506 meets the ferry at Syðradalur.
For the north, drive on to Hvannasund, about 8 km past the village and the port for the Svínoy and Fugloy ferry. Viðareiði is the northernmost village, and the Villingadalsfjall hike there costs DKK 200 at the gate. Enniberg needs a guide.
Longer plans
If you stay longer, add Kunoy, reached by road on bus 504 through Haraldssund, or fit in a puffin trip to Mykines, which is open from 1 May to 31 August and costs about DKK 400 to 500 online with a guide, plus the ferry. Nólsoy is the other puffin island.
Getting around
Bus 400 links Klaksvík with Tórshavn. Some departures run only on phone request an hour ahead. If you arrive by car from Tórshavn, the subsea tunnels carry tolls, and the Norðoyatunnilin from Leirvík to Klaksvík costs DKK 50 per single trip for a car. Pay at service.tunnil.fo within 6 days or an invoice fee applies, and look at Tunnil.fo for current rates.
