Multi Day Trips From Swakopmund
Swakopmund is better as a base on a longer Namibia route than as a place to start multi-day tours. The town sells day outings and half-day tours, and the longer journeys on the classic circuit begin and end in other places. This page covers how Swakopmund fits into that circuit and what an overnight outing from town looks like. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$).
Where Swakopmund sits on the circuit
The usual route runs from Windhoek to Sossusvlei, then Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, then Damaraland and Spitzkoppe, and finally Etosha. Sossusvlei and Etosha are destinations in their own right, so they are only mentioned here as the legs before and after the coast.
- Windhoek to Swakopmund is 352 km on the B2, about 4 to 4.5 hours by road.
- Sesriem and Sossusvlei are about 345 to 400 km away, around 5 to 5.5 hours with much of it on gravel.
- Etosha is well over 500 km away, roughly 6 to 8 hours.
Dune 45 is on the road at Sesriem, far inland, and it is not a Swakopmund outing.
Getting there without driving
The airport at Walvis Bay lies roughly 45 to 50 km away, and Airlink flies into it from Johannesburg. There are no scheduled flights between Windhoek and Walvis Bay, so most travellers drive from the capital. Namibia drives on the left, and the Namibian dollar is pegged one to one to the South African rand.
Overnight at Spitzkoppe
Spitzkoppe is roughly 150 km from Swakopmund, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, with a gravel last stretch. The community camp lets you stay beside the granite peaks. Entry and camping fees are set by the community, so ask at the gate. It works as a one night stop between Swakopmund and Damaraland.
Cape Cross and the Skeleton Coast
North of Swakopmund the C34 coastal road reaches the Cape Cross seal colony about 120 km out, and the road continues into the Skeleton Coast National Park. The park is on the ministry fee schedule, with the same adult tiers as Cape Cross. Access rules and permits beyond Cape Cross are best checked with Namibia Wildlife Resorts before you plan an overnight.
How many nights
Two nights in Swakopmund are enough for a Living Desert tour and a Walvis Bay cruise. A third night allows Cape Cross or a Sandwich Harbour tour, which must go with a registered operator from Walvis Bay. A fourth lets you add the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive, which need a permit from the ministry office in town.
Where to stay
Swakopmund has German-style guesthouses and hotels around the old town, and Walvis Bay has its own range. Book ahead for school holidays. See the town overview for context on the area, and search stays on Booking.com .
