Multi-Day Trips from Doha
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. Qatar was hit by Iranian missile and drone strikes from 28 February 2026, and flights to Doha were suspended before returning in phases from March and April. Missile barrages over Doha were reported again in July, so do not assume a ceasefire is holding. The UK FCDO does not advise against all travel to Qatar but warns of short-notice airport and airspace closures, and the US State Department publishes its own advisory. Check your airline and insurer before you book. Hotels and tours may change terms at short notice.
One base, several days
Qatar is a small peninsula, so there is no road circuit that needs a change of hotel each night. The sensible shape is a stay in Doha with one or two longer days out. A three-day plan fits most visitors, and four or five days add the desert and the north coast. Season matters: November to March is the comfortable window, and summer heat of 40C or more limits outdoor time.
Day one: the old and the new city
Start at the Museum of Islamic Art, which is closed on Wednesdays, then walk the Corniche promenade in the cooler hours. Spend the evening in Souq Waqif, where the Falcon Souq is open evenings, including Fridays. The Gold Line stops at Souq Waqif and at the National Museum.
Day two: museums and Msheireb
The National Museum of Qatar is closed on Tuesdays and open 09:00 to 19:00 on most other days, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. Msheireb Museums next door in downtown Doha are free and closed on Sundays; Bin Jelmood House documents the history of slavery and calls for a quiet visit. Finish at Katara Cultural Village, which has free entry and is on the Red Line.
Day three: desert or north coast
Choose one. An Inland Sea trip needs a licensed operator and a 4x4 through Sealine, with shared half-day trips advertised from roughly QAR 200 to 250 per person. A north-coast day covers Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, about 100 km northwest of Doha, and can include kayaking at Purple Island near Al Khor if the tide allows. Both are best between November and March.
Optional days four and five
Add Mathaf in Education City, free but ticketed and closed on Mondays, and Qatar National Library nearby. Spend an evening at Place Vendome in Lusail for the hourly fountains from 19:00 to 23:00, or take the Pearl’s Qanat Quartier canals at dusk. A Banana Island day pass leaves from Al Shyoukh Terminal on the Corniche, with a catamaran crossing of about 30 minutes.
Overnight stays
Desert camps and night stays near the Inland Sea are sold by tour operators. Camp names, prices and facilities vary, so ask each operator what is included, how many guests share a camp, and who the licensed driver is. FCDO advice is that desert travel needs a properly equipped 4x4, convoy travel, water and a phone.
Practical points
- The Qatar Museums Discover One Pass is reported at about QAR 70 for five days; check Qatar Museums for the current offer.
- Entry rules differ by passport. British citizens on a full passport can get a tourist visa on arrival, but check the official Hayya or Ministry of Interior eligibility page for your own passport.
- Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel bars and restaurants, and Ramadan daytime rules apply to everyone.
