A Bali loop that casually adds “scuba dive around the Gili Islands” is skipping a fact worth knowing before you book: the Gilis aren’t in Bali at all.
The Gili Islands are Lombok, not Bali
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air belong to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, a different island and province. Fast boats from Padang Bai take roughly 1.5 hours from about €20.50; Sanur crossings run 2-3.5 hours, roughly IDR 425,000-550,000. That crossing alone eats most of a day each way, so treat this as an overnight-plus trip rather than something you can bolt onto a south-Bali beach week.
West Bali National Park and Menjangan Island
Bali’s least-visited corner, reached from the south coast in 2.5-3+ hours, pairs well with a north-Bali overnight rather than an attempted single-day round trip. Menjangan Island’s diving is the draw here, distinct from the more crowded reefs further south.
North Bali and Lovina, honestly
Lovina’s sunrise boat trips are marketed as a peaceful dolphin encounter, and the reality is more complicated : dozens of boats can converge on the same pod at sunrise, sometimes crowding or racing around the animals, and a 2023 local rule requiring a 25-meter distance is inconsistently enforced. Pair Lovina with Munduk’s waterfall trekking and the Banjar hot springs, and ask the operator about the distance rule before booking.
Bromo-Ijen and Komodo
Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater sit in East Java, a 3-4 day tour crossing by ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, typically a pre-dawn jeep to Bromo’s rim and a 2am hike into Ijen’s blue-flame crater.
