Melbourne + Beyond: 3 Day Victoria Trip

Three days is where the day trips genuinely start: our 2-day city core plus the Great Ocean Road as a single long day. ⚠ Be honest with yourself here, a single day covering Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles and back is a real ~12-hour push; if you can spare a fourth day, our 4-day itinerary turns it into a two-day, one-night trip instead, which is genuinely the better way to do it.

Book these before you go
- ETA or eVisitor : sort entry before you fly, Australia has no visa-free entry.
- Great Ocean Road day tour : worth it for a single-day version, since you won’t be doing the driving on a long day.
- St Kilda penguins: the dusk viewing slot is free but needs a timed reservation that books out.
Day 1: CBD, laneways, and the MCG
Federation Square, the laneways (Hosier Lane, Degraves St, the Block and Royal Arcades), and ⚠ NGV’s two separate free buildings. The MCG, Australia’s largest stadium, ground tours around AUD $38. Dinner in Chinatown, the oldest continuously running Chinatown in the Western world.
Day 2: Markets and St Kilda
Queen Victoria Market (1878), then St Kilda’s Luna Park and Acland St. The little penguins come ashore on the breakwater at dusk, free but book the timed slot ahead.
Day 3: The Great Ocean Road
Early morning: Depart early, this is a genuine ~3-4 hour drive one way, or a full-day bus tour if you’d rather not drive it yourself.
Midday: Koalas at Kennett River, then on toward the coast.
Afternoon: The Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, the marquee stop of the whole drive.
Evening: A long drive back to Melbourne, or an overnight along the coast if you decide to split it after all.
Is one day enough for the Great Ocean Road?
Technically yes, honestly no. A single day covers the highlights but means roughly 7-8 hours of driving or bus time against a few hours actually at the coast. If three days total feels tight, our 4-day itinerary turns this into a proper two-day, one-night trip. Get your ETA or eVisitor sorted before you fly and load a Myki once you land, trams and buses outside the Free Tram Zone need one.
