Two days here is deliberately the fast version of the city, just enough to say you’ve seen Melbourne before heading out into Victoria. If you actually have longer, our 3-day itinerary is this same two days plus the Great Ocean Road. Day 1: CBD, laneways, and the MCG
Morning: Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, then the laneways, Hosier Lane, Degraves St, the Block Arcade (1892) and Royal Arcade (1870).
Afternoon: ⚠ NGV Australia at Fed Square and NGV International on St Kilda Rd are two separate free buildings, pick one if you’re short on time. The MCG, Australia’s largest stadium, ground tours run around AUD $38.
Evening: Dinner in Chinatown, the oldest continuously running Chinatown in the Western world.
Day 2: Markets, St Kilda, and beyond
Morning: Queen Victoria Market (1878) for a browse and breakfast.
Afternoon: St Kilda’s Luna Park and Acland St.
Evening: The little penguins on the breakwater at dusk, free but book the timed slot ahead. If you’re staying longer, this is the point where Victoria’s day trips take over.
Is two days enough before heading out of Melbourne?
Enough to get the city’s headline sights done without lingering, which is exactly the point if the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island, or the Yarra Valley are the real reason for the trip. Get your ETA or eVisitor sorted before you fly and load a Myki once you land, trams and buses outside the Free Tram Zone need one.
