La Paz: The Best Photo Spots
La Paz’s geography does most of the work for you: a city built into a steep bowl at roughly 3,640 meters, ringed by Andean peaks and topped by the snowcapped Illimani. Here are five spots that make the most of it.
1. Mi Teleferico, especially the Red Line
The cable car network is the single best photography tool in the city. The Red Line climbs from downtown up to El Alto and delivers the most dramatic single shot in La Paz: the whole bowl falling away below you with Illimani framed behind it. Ride near golden hour if you can, and remember the turnstiles don’t take cash, so load a card before you go.
2. Mirador Killi Killi
A free, easy viewpoint that captures the whole city in one wide frame, from the historic center up to the rim where El Alto begins. Good any time of day, but especially at sunset when the bowl’s terraced hillsides catch the light.
3. Valle de la Luna
About 10km south of downtown, this eroded clay landscape looks genuinely otherworldly, especially in the low, warm light of early morning or late afternoon. The loop takes 30 to 60 minutes on foot, easy pacing for anyone still adjusting to the altitude.
4. The Witches’ Market
Calle Linares offers some of the most distinctive street photography in the city, but treat it as the living market it is, not a photo backdrop. Ask permission before photographing vendors or their goods; a small tip is often appropriate and appreciated.
5. Plaza Murillo
Framed by the Palacio Quemado and the National Congress building, whose clock famously runs backwards, this plaza captures La Paz’s political heart in a single, walkable square. Morning light, before the plaza fills up, works best.
A practical note
Most of these spots sit at or above the city’s base altitude, and a few, like Killi Killi and stretches of the Teleferico, climb higher still. Pace your first day or two before chasing sunrise shots, and keep water on hand; altitude and a full day of walking add up faster than they feel like they should.
