6 Nature Spots in Johannesburg

The earlier version of this page mixed real reserves in with a fabricated “Gold Reef City Nature Reserve.” Johannesburg is one of the world’s largest human-made urban forests, by some counts around 6 million trees. These green spaces sit inside a city with genuine violent-crime risk, though, so treat them like any other outing: go in a group and in daylight, and the real spaces below are worth the correction.
6 real nature spots in Johannesburg
- The Johannesburg Botanical Garden and Emmarentia Dam: a Rose Garden with 4,500+ varieties, plus a dam for a quieter walk, in the northern suburbs.
- The Wilds: near the CBD, a revitalized park that was a genuine crime hotspot through the 1990s and 2000s. It’s improved, but confirm current safety conditions and go in a group, not solo.
- Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve: at 700+ hectares, the metro’s largest reserve, free entry, open sunrise to sunset, with zebra and wildebeest roaming inside the city limits. Hike in a group, on the marked trails, in daylight.
- Melville Koppies: a heritage and geology site on roughly 3-billion-year-old rock, with the Friends of Melville Koppies running guided Sunday walks, the model for how to visit safely.
- Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (Roodepoort): the roughly 70m Witpoortjie Falls and a resident Verreaux’s eagle pair, open daily 8am-5pm.
- The Magaliesberg: further out (~1hr), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015, not a World Heritage Site, with real hiking and rock-climbing terrain if you want to extend beyond the city’s own green spaces.

| Klipriviersberg | South of the city | Group, marked trails, daytime |

| Magaliesberg | ~1hr out | Group, guided hikes available |
For real trail-by-trail hiking detail, see the hiking areas guide , and for the wider day-trip picture the Magaliesberg belongs to, the day trips guide . Book a small-group Magaliesberg hiking day if you’d rather not go it alone, and a Sandton or Rosebank base keeps you within easy Uber reach of the closer-in spots on this list.
One concrete move: start with the Melville Koppies guided Sunday walk if this is your first green-space outing in the city. It’s the one spot on this list built specifically around safe, organized access, and it sets the pattern for the rest.
