La Paz: Where to Stay by Area
La Paz is unusual among cities in that where you sleep changes your altitude. The city sits in a steep bowl, and the difference between its highest and lowest neighborhoods runs to several hundred meters, which matters more here than in almost any other destination on earth. Here’s how the areas actually break down.
Casco Viejo / City Center
The historic core around Plaza Murillo, San Francisco Church, and the Witches’ Market sits at roughly 3,600 to 3,700 meters, right in the thick of the sights, walkable to most of what’s on a first-timer’s list. This is also the highest of the popular areas to stay, so if you’re arriving with no acclimatization at all, consider one of the other two options for at least your first night. Hotel Rosario and Hotel Europa are reliable mid-range choices here, both offering city or mountain views and restaurants on site.
Sopocachi
A bohemian, walkable neighborhood a short taxi or Teleferico ride from downtown, Sopocachi has the best concentration of independent cafes, bars, and restaurants in the city, and a noticeably calmer pace after dark than the tourist-heavy center. Hotel Las Olas here offers modern rooms and a rooftop terrace with city views. Loki La Paz, a popular hostel with dorms and private rooms, is a solid budget base in the same area, organizing its own trekking and cultural activities.
Zona Sur
Zona Sur, the Calacoto and San Miguel districts, sits roughly 500 meters lower than downtown and is genuinely warmer, a real inversion of how most cities are laid out: the wealthier, lower neighborhoods are milder, while the poorer, higher ones, up toward El Alto, are colder. If altitude is hitting you hard, or you’d simply rather sleep somewhere mild and leafy, this is the district to book, though it means a taxi into the historic center for most sightseeing.
Budget hostels
Wild Rover Backpackers, in the busy El Prado area, and Loki La Paz in Sopocachi both run dorms and private rooms with rooftop terraces and organized activities, a social, affordable option for solo travelers.
Booking notes for 2026
The boliviano floated in mid-2026 and its value is still moving, so treat any specific exchange rate as outdated the moment you read it; check a live converter before you book and again once you arrive. Card payments work at upscale hotels, but carry small US dollars as backup given the ongoing cash and dollar-shortage situation. Apartment rentals through Airbnb and Booking.com are widely available across all three areas if you’d rather self-cater.
