Johannesburg Hiking: 4 Trails That Work

Before you go: real hiking exists around Johannesburg, but it comes with the same crime-reality caveat as the rest of the city. Hike in a group, in daylight, on marked trails, and prefer the guided options below over going solo. Use Uber or Bolt or a car to reach the trailhead rather than walking through unfamiliar streets to get there. Keep car doors locked en route. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
The earlier version of this page named trails, including a “Zulu-Hlanganani Trail” and a “Witkoppen Nature Reserve,” that don’t check out. Here are 4 real hiking areas, corrected, with the safety context each one actually needs.
4 real hiking areas near Johannesburg
- Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve: the metro’s largest reserve at 700+ hectares, free entry, open sunrise to sunset, with marked trails through terrain that still holds zebra and wildebeest inside the city limits. Hike in a group, during the day.
- Melville Koppies: roughly 3-billion-year-old rock formations inside the suburb of Melville, with San rock art on parts of the site. The Friends of Melville Koppies run guided Sunday walks, which is the model for visiting safely rather than showing up on your own.
- Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (Roodepoort): well-maintained trails around the roughly 70m Witpoortjie Falls, open daily 8am-5pm, with a resident Verreaux’s eagle pair as the signature sighting.
- The Magaliesberg: about an hour from the city, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2015, not a World Heritage Site) with genuine rock-climbing and hiking terrain across ancient, roughly 2.3-billion-year-old rock. The furthest of the four, and worth building into a half or full day trip rather than a quick outing.
Trail difficulty and access
| Area | Distance from CBD | Difficulty | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klipriviersberg | South of the city | Easy-moderate | Group, daytime |
| Melville Koppies | Melville | Easy | Friends’ guided Sunday walk |
| Walter Sisulu NBG | Roodepoort | Easy | Solo or group, daytime |
| Magaliesberg | ~1hr out | Moderate-challenging | Group, guided hikes available |
For the fuller green-space picture, including spots that aren’t set up for actual hiking, see the nature spots guide , and for the Magaliesberg as part of a wider day out, the day trips guide . Book a guided Magaliesberg hike rather than attempting the range solo, and a Sandton base keeps the closer-in trails within easy Uber reach.
One concrete move: if you’ve never hiked in South Africa before, start with a Melville Koppies guided Sunday walk before attempting Klipriviersberg or the Magaliesberg solo. It’s the lowest-stakes way to calibrate what “hike in a group, on marked trails” actually looks like here.
