Montevideo: Green Escapes and Day Hikes

Let’s be honest upfront: Montevideo is a flat coastal city, and there’s no real hiking here. If you’re picturing mountain trails, you’re thinking of the wrong country. What Montevideo actually offers is a long, walkable waterfront, a handful of proper city parks, and easy day trips into genuine countryside, all of which cover the “green escape” itch without pretending the capital has terrain it doesn’t.
The Rambla, on foot
The closest thing Montevideo has to a hiking trail is the Rambla itself, roughly 22km of waterfront promenade running along the Río de la Plata. Walk or bike a few kilometers of it, from Ciudad Vieja out past Pocitos toward Carrasco, and you get open water views, sea air, and genuine distance covered, just no elevation gain.
Parque Rodó
A proper city park with a lake, walking paths, and the National Museum of Visual Arts nearby. It’s compact, but it’s the closest thing to a green loop within the city itself, and a good place for an easy morning walk before the day heats up.
Parque Prado
One of the older, larger green spaces in the city, with the Jardín Botánico attached. Shaded paths make it a good option to escape the coastal wind on a cooler day, and it’s quieter than Parque Rodó since fewer visitors make the trip inland.
Parque Batlle
A large park with sports facilities, walking paths, and open lawns near Estadio Centenario, good for a longer loop if you want more distance than Parque Rodó offers without leaving the city.
For actual hiking, leave the city
If you want real trails, they’re outside Montevideo, not in it. The Santa Lucía wetlands and the Canelones countryside, both under an hour away, offer genuine walking terrain and a look at rural Uruguay that the capital simply doesn’t have. Combine either with the Canelones wine country day trip (Bodega Bouza is about 40 minutes out) for a fuller half-day outside the city.
