During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Dubai is a genuinely convenient base for the rest of the UAE, not just its own sights. 1. Abu Dhabi (About 1.5 Hours)
The actual UAE capital, and the trip most first-timers should prioritize. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (allow 60-90 minutes, robes provided for those who need them) is the centerpiece; pair it with Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and, if time allows, Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace open to visitors. Families sometimes swap the Louvre for Ferrari World or a day on Yas Island instead. Abu Dhabi has its own airport, so it can double as a fly-in gateway rather than only a day trip.
2. Sharjah (About 25-45 Minutes)
The closest of the five, and the UAE’s designated “Cultural Capital of the Arab World.” The Museum of Islamic Civilization, the heritage area, and the old souqs make for an easy half-day that pairs well with a Dubai morning.
3. Hatta (About 90 Minutes)
Dubai’s own mountain exclave in the Hajar Mountains, and the most different-feeling trip on this list. Hatta Dam’s turquoise reservoir is set up for kayaking, the Heritage Village covers the region’s pre-oil life, and there’s genuine hiking and mountain biking around the Wadi Hub. This is the trip for anyone who thinks Dubai is only desert and glass towers.
4. East Coast and Fujairah (About 1.5-2 Hours)
A crossing to the Gulf of Oman coast, a different sea entirely from Dubai’s Gulf-facing beaches. Snoopy Island off Fujairah is a genuine snorkel and dive spot, and Al-Bidyah Mosque, roughly dating to 1446, is the UAE’s oldest mosque, small and easy to combine with Fujairah Fort.
5. Al Ain (About 1.5-2 Hours)
The UAE’s “Garden City,” and the trip for anyone who wants oasis greenery rather than another beach. Al Ain Oasis is a UNESCO-listed working date-palm oasis you can walk through for free, and Jebel Hafeet’s mountain road is one of the best drives in the country, with the Al Ain Zoo as an easy family add.
