Krabi Wildlife: Monkeys, Sharks and Bats
The best animal encounters in Krabi cost little more than a boat fare, because the animals are wild and the landscape brings you to them. Monkeys work the Railay footpaths, reef sharks patrol the shallows of Maya Bay and fruit bats hang above the Diamond Cave boardwalk. Start with those, and treat any captive attraction with caution.
Monkeys on the paths and stairs
On the Railay peninsula, the pedestrian paths between Railay West, Railay East and Phra Nang pass under limestone overhangs where dusky leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques forage in the canopy. The leaf monkeys are shy and best watched quietly from a distance. Railay is reached only by longtail, at ฿100 per person each way from Ao Nang.
The macaques on the lower steps of Tiger Cave Temple are a different matter. They snatch food, bottles and plastic bags, and they can bite. Carry nothing visible, keep your hands free and never feed them. Speedboat tours to Phi Phi also stop at Monkey Beach, where the same rule applies.
Mangroves by kayak
Ao Thalane, north of Ao Nang, is the richest wildlife trip on the mainland. A guided half-day by sea kayak, about ฿500 to ฿800 per person, threads mangrove channels where kingfishers flash across the water, fiddler crabs wave from the mud and monitor lizards bask on the roots. Crab-eating macaques swim between the trees. Go early, when the animals are most active. You can compare Ao Thalane kayak trips on Viator and pick a morning slot.
Sharks, turtles and reef fish
Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh is home to blacktip reef sharks, which is why swimming there is banned and visitors may only wade at the edge. Boats stay outside the bay, and landings stop each year from 1 August to 30 September, as set out by the Thai national parks listing . The marine park’s rules and fees are listed by Thai National Parks .
Snorkellers see the most fish at Koh Poda on the Four Islands longtail trip. Certified divers who go to Shark Point and Anemone Reef can meet leopard sharks, moray eels and sea turtles among soft corals, and a two-tank day costs about ฿3,200 to ฿4,200. Search Krabi snorkel trips on GetYourGuide for boat days with gear included.
Bats in Diamond Cave
Diamond Cave, Tham Phra Nang Nai on Railay, has a raised walkway through lit chambers where fruit bats roost overhead. A ticket costs about ฿100 per adult and ฿50 per child. Keep voices and torches low near the roosts.
Elephants: how to choose a venue
Several elephant venues around Krabi and Ao Nang use similar names, and visitor reports of how they treat their animals vary widely. Judge any of them on practice, not branding:
- No riding of any kind, and no chains or hooks in sight.
- Visits built around feeding, walking alongside and watching mud baths.
- A clear answer to what happens to the elephants when no visitors are there.
- Recent independent reviews that describe the same thing.
If a venue offers rides or keeps elephants in small pens between groups, leave. A half-day visit is one of the dearer activities in Krabi, so choose carefully.
A sea creature to avoid
Box jellyfish are found in Krabi waters, especially from May to October. Watch for beach warning flags, and note which beaches keep vinegar stations. The UK government safety advice for Thailand covers sea hazards on the Andaman coast.

Tip: if you stay overnight on Railay, walk the paths early the next morning, before the day boats arrive, for the best chance of seeing dusky leaf monkeys.
