Krabi Multi-Day Trips: Base and Island Hops
Krabi works best as a base with excursions rather than a one-hotel stay. Three shapes cover most multi-day plans, and each can stretch from three days to a week. Ferry schedules change by season, so confirm departure times with the operator or your hotel before fixing dates.
Shape one: Ao Nang base with day excursions
Stay in Ao Nang for three or four nights and treat every other place as a day trip. Railay is a 10-minute longtail away for ฿100 per person each way, with a higher fare after dark. Day trips by boat include the Four Islands, the Hong Islands and Phi Phi, which are three separate products. Inland, Khlong Thom has the hot springs and Emerald Pool. The advantage of this shape is a single hotel and no luggage on boats. The three-night Krabi itinerary shows how the days can run, and you can check Ao Nang hotel rates on Booking.com to compare beachfront and inland options.
Shape two: Ao Nang plus Railay
Split the stay: two nights on the main beach, then two nights in Railay, which is reached only by boat. Climbers use Railay as a training base, with beginner courses and more than 700 routes. Others prefer a quieter evening, because no cars reach the peninsula. Plan luggage carefully. You will wade into the water to board, so pack a small bag for the boat and keep valuables dry. If seas are rough, the pier at Ao Nam Mao is the protected departure point.
Shape three: Krabi plus an island by ferry
Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi are the usual add-ons, reached by ferry from the Krabi coast. They make a good change of pace after a few days on the mainland, but sailing times vary by season and operator, and crossings can be cancelled in the monsoon. Book flexible tickets, leave a buffer day before any flight home and never rely on a morning boat to catch an international flight.
Entry rules for a longer stay
Visa-exempt stays in Thailand are up to 30 days, and entries are normally limited to two per calendar year. The UK government’s Thailand entry guidance has the current rules. The arrival card is free and is filed online at the TDAC portal within the 3 days before you land.
Choosing the season
May to October is monsoon. Boats are less reliable, rip currents run, and ferry hops are the first thing to fail. A longer trip in those months works best when it leans on the mainland: Tiger Cave, the inland pools and the Krabi Town weekend market on Friday to Sunday evenings. A four-day plan is laid out in the four-night Krabi itinerary .
Tip: put the island ferry on your second-to-last day, not your last, so a cancelled boat does not cost you a flight.
