Krabi Workshops: Cooking, Batik, Muay Thai
A good workshop in Krabi leaves you with something you can repeat at home: a curry paste, a stretch of dyed cotton, a decent roundhouse kick. Four kinds of class are worth your time here, and they differ a lot in how hard you work and what you take away.
Southern Thai cooking
Verdict: if you book one class in Krabi, make it this one. Cooking schools in Ao Nang and Krabi Town usually begin at a local fresh market, where you pick out galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime, turmeric and shrimp paste and learn what each does. In the kitchen you pound a yellow curry paste by hand, cook a massaman curry and steam sticky rice to eat with mango. Tell the teacher your heat limit early. You can compare Krabi cooking classes on Viator and check whether the market visit is included.
Batik painting
Batik is the traditional southern Thai art of hot-wax resist dyeing, and workshops run in Krabi Town and on Koh Lanta. You sketch a design, often sea creatures or island scenes, trace it in molten wax with a small spouted canting tool, then brush on bright textile dyes. The wax keeps the lines white when the cloth is dyed. It is calm, sit-down work that suits children, older travellers and anyone sheltering from monsoon rain, and you leave with a piece of fabric you made.
Muay Thai training
Training camps in Ao Nang run sessions of about 90 minutes led by Thai fighters. A beginner session covers stance, punches, kicks, elbows and knees, then rounds on the heavy bag. It is hard work in tropical heat, so drink plenty, eat lightly beforehand and tell the trainer about any injuries. You can find Ao Nang Muay Thai sessions on GetYourGuide . Anyone planning weeks of training should know that visa-exempt entry is for tourism only and lasts 30 days, as the UK government entry requirements set out.
A climbing course
Railay’s half-day beginner courses are really workshops on rock. For about ฿1,000 to ฿1,500 you learn to tie in, move on limestone and lower off, with an instructor, harness and shoes provided and three or four routes climbed. Railay is reached only by longtail, ฿100 per person each way from Ao Nang.
The longtail boats themselves
Look closely at any longtail, ruea hang yao, pulled up on Ao Nang Beach and you will see colourful silk ribbons, phueng, tied to the prow. They carry spiritual significance and are part of the craft tradition behind these wooden boats. Ask your boatman about them on a calm crossing, and you get a free lesson in local belief.
Booking and timing
Classes are the most weatherproof plans in the province. From May to October, when boat trips cancel at short notice, book classes with flexible dates so you can move one onto a stormy day. For broader advice on local laws and customs, read the UK government travel advice for Thailand .

Tip: take a cooking class early in your trip, because once you know what galangal and shrimp paste taste like, every market stall and menu in Krabi makes more sense.
