Indonesia's Best Multi-Day Trips
Indonesia rewards the trips that cross a real boundary, whether that is a strait, a caldera rim, or a tectonic line, more than the ones that loop a single island. These three cover the country’s most established multi-day routes.
Java overland: rail and two volcanoes, 7-10 days
Jakarta to Bandung runs on the Whoosh high-speed line in 30-45 minutes, then executive trains cross West Java’s rice terraces to Yogyakarta for three days of Borobudur, Prambanan and the Kraton. From there, trains continue to Probolinggo or Malang for the Mount Bromo 4WD sunrise run, then on to Banyuwangi for the Kawah Ijen midnight blue-fire hike, finishing with a 30-minute ASDP ferry across the Bali Strait into Gilimanuk (IDR 10,000). Komodo National Park by phinisi, 3 days, 2 nights
A traditional wooden phinisi schooner sails from Labuan Bajo through Kelor Island, Manjarite’s reef, and Kalong Island, where thousands of fruit bats lift off at sunset; day two brings Padar Island’s sunrise hike, Pink Beach, a ranger-led Komodo or Rinca dragon trek, and Manta Point, before a final day around Kanawa Island’s reef. Shared-cabin trips run IDR 2,800,000-4,500,000 per person; private charters start around IDR 25,000,000 for the boat. National park fees are paid separately on top. Mount Rinjani summit and crater lake, 3-4 days
Lombok’s 3,726-metre volcano is climbed from Senaru or Sembalun village: day one crosses savanna to the Sembalun crater rim at 2,639 metres for a camp overlooking the caldera; day two starts a 2am summit push over loose scree for sunrise, then descends to the Segara Anak crater lake and its hot springs; day three exits through rainforest via the Senaru rim. Licensed guides and porters are legally required and booked through registered operators via rinjaninationalpark.id ; packages run IDR 2,500,000-4,000,000 per person including guides, porters, food, tents and park entry. The entire national park closes every year from 1 January to 31 March for monsoon safety and trail recovery, reopening 1 April, so build the trip outside that window.
The verdict
