Helsinki Romantic Getaways: Sauna and Sunset
Helsinki Romantic Getaways: Sauna and Sunset
Helsinki romance is warm wood, cold sea and a long table at dusk. This plan follows one evening from the first steam to the last glass, with options for a second night. In summer the light lingers late into the evening. Prices are in euros.
Late afternoon: sauna at Löyly
Löyly on the Hernesaari waterfront is a sculpted thermo-wood building with a smoke sauna, a wood-burning sauna and a ladder down into the Baltic Sea. A two-hour session costs €29, towel included, with an extra hour at €12; booking ahead is recommended (loylyhelsinki.fi ). A swimsuit can be rented for €8. The pine terrace is the place for a drink afterwards. The sea dip is a cold shock, so step in slowly by the ladder, keep your head above water and skip alcohol beforehand.
For a hotel with a view of the water, search Helsinki hotels on Booking.com .
Early evening: a picnic on the ferry island
Buy smoked salmon, Karelian pastries and cloudberry jam at the Old Market Hall, then take the HSL ferry from Market Square to Suomenlinna. The crossing is about 15 minutes on an AB ticket (€3.30 in the app, €3.50 contactless, two tickets for two). Walk to the cliffs near the King’s Gate and watch sails and passenger ships pass through the channel. Winter and autumn boats run less often, every 40 to 60 minutes in winter, so confirm the last return on hsl.fi .
Dinner: two candlelit rooms
Ravintola Kuurna at Meritullinkatu 6 in Kruununhaka is an intimate bistro with candles and seasonal set menus that change about every three weeks, and it serves in the evenings. Ravintola Sea Horse at Kapteeninkatu 11 in Ullanlinna is a long-running local favourite, known for painted seahorse murals, crispy Baltic herring and reindeer fillet. Reserve ahead for both.
After dark: music or a sea pool
The Helsinki Music Centre hosts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic, and the programme is posted at musiikkitalo.fi . Allas Sea Pool beside Market Square has heated pools, saunas and a view of the harbour lights; a two-hour ticket is €24 from Friday afternoon to Sunday and €19 earlier in the week (allaspool.fi ).
Winter notes
Between late autumn and early spring, pavements can hide black ice, so wear boots with a good tread and take a slow arm-in-arm pace. Ice-hole swimming is for places with staff on hand, and anyone with a heart condition should ask a doctor first.
Which night to choose
Pick Löyly for the best single evening, and keep the Suomenlinna picnic for a calm summer day. See the Helsinki sightseeing page for daytime stops.
Tip: book the Löyly slot for late afternoon in summer and the Kuurna table for after.
