Helsinki Family Activities: Zoo, Ferry, Oodi
A zoo on its own island, a fortress you reach by ferry and a library with a cloud-shaped ceiling make a strong family trio, and none of them needs a car. Helsinki is also a place where the season changes what is on offer, so the notes below say which options run all year and which are summer treats. Prices are in euros.
Korkeasaari Zoo
Korkeasaari opened in 1889 and covers a 22-hectare island, which makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. It specialises in northern and mountain species: snow leopards, Amur tigers, wolverines, European brown bears and forest reindeer, plus two tropical houses, Africasia and Amazonia. Adult tickets range from about €22 to €29, child tickets from free to about €20, and prices change by date, so check korkeasaari.fi before you book. The zoo is open daily, with hours that shift by season. To get there, take tram 13 from Kalasatama metro station to the Nihti stop and cross the Finkensilta bridge on foot.
If you would like a guided option, you can browse Helsinki family tours on GetYourGuide .
Suomenlinna by public ferry
Children usually remember the ferry first. It leaves from Market Square, takes about 15 minutes and uses an ordinary AB ticket at €3.30 in the HSL app or €3.50 contactless. On the islands there are stone ramparts, big coastal cannons and twisting tunnels to explore with a phone torch. Autumn and winter crossings are less frequent (every 40 to 60 minutes in winter), so check hsl.fi for the return boat and wrap up warmly.
Oodi and Allas for any weather
Oodi library is free, with a public workshop floor with 3D printers and a top-floor terrace. It is open daily, from 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends (oodihelsinki.fi ).
Allas Sea Pool beside Market Square has a heated outdoor pool at about 27 degrees and a separate children’s pool, with the big passenger ferries sliding past. A two-hour ticket for ages 3 to 12 costs €11 on weekdays and €14 from Friday afternoon to Sunday; adults pay €19 or €24. See allaspool.fi .
Linnanmäki, a summer park
Linnanmäki amusement park in Alppiharju is run by the Children’s Day Foundation, and its profits go to child welfare. The wooden coaster Vuoristorata dates from 1951 and still carries a brake operator on each train. The park is a summer attraction, and outside that season it opens only for a short event in October. Everyone aged 3 and over needs an entry ticket or a ride wristband, so look at linnanmaki.fi for dates and prices.
Practical points
In winter, black ice on pavements makes buggy-pushing hard, so choose boots with deep treads. Tap water is safe and very good; fill bottles anywhere.
Verdict: for a first family day, take the ferry in the morning and the sea pool in the afternoon. For more ideas, the Helsinki activities page covers saunas and museums.
Tip: check the zoo’s opening hours on the day you go, because they shift with the season.
