Helsinki Bus Tours and Transit Passes
A sightseeing bus is one way to see Helsinki, but the city’s own transit network is cheap enough that most visitors end up using both.
The hop-on-hop-off route
Stromma runs a hop-on-hop-off bus around the main sights from Senate Square, seasonally from May through September (verify exact dates before you go), with a day ticket priced at EUR 36. Stops typically cover Senate Square, the Rock Church at Temppeliaukio, Sibelius Monument, and the harbor near Market Square, letting you get off at any stop and catch a later bus to continue. Check current hop-on-hop-off availability on GetYourGuide or compare options on Viator before booking.
HSL zones, which most tourists actually need
Helsinki’s public buses, trams, metro, commuter trains, and the Suomenlinna ferry all run on the same HSL (Helsingin seudun liikenne) zone system, and a single ticket type covers whichever mode gets you there fastest.
- Zone AB: Covers the walkable center, inner suburbs, and the Suomenlinna ferry. EUR 3.30 via the HSL app or EUR 3.50 paid on board, valid 80 minutes with free transfers.
- Zone ABC: The one zone up, required only for reaching Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Costs roughly EUR 4.40 via the app or EUR 4.80 at a platform validator.
Buying single HSL tickets through the app is usually cheaper for a short visit than the multi-day Helsinki Card, unless you are also visiting three or more paid museums in a day. HSL’s own site has the current zone map and fare list if your route isn’t covered above.
Getting to and from the airport
No metro line reaches Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL); the connection is the Kehärata commuter rail loop instead. Two directions run from the same underground station between Terminals 1 and 2: Train P clockwise (28 minutes to Central Station) and Train I counter-clockwise (33 minutes), alternating roughly every 10 minutes. Both require the ABC-zone fare above, not the cheaper AB ticket.
A city bus that becomes a day trip
The OnniBus and Matkahuolto coach lines that leave from Kamppi bus terminal double as an easy day-trip option: the direct route to Porvoo takes about 50 minutes and typically costs EUR 5-10 one-way. OnniBus posts its own timetables and fares . See the day trips guide for what to do once you arrive, and for the ferry and rail options that cover the rest of the region.
A practical note
Trams 2, 3, and 4 cover most of the same ground as a sightseeing bus at a fraction of the cost, if you would rather stay flexible than commit to a fixed loop and schedule.
