Helsinki Multi-Day Trips: Tallinn and Beyond
Helsinki Multi-Day Trips: Tallinn and Beyond
Helsinki makes a good base for a long weekend that crosses a sea, a lake district or even the Arctic Circle. Three routes work from the capital without a car: a sea hop to Tallinn, a rail run into the lakes at Tampere, and a night train to Lapland. Each is described below in rough days, with the logistics that matter.
Twin capitals: Helsinki and Tallinn (3 to 4 days)
Spend two nights in Helsinki and one or two in Tallinn, and treat the Gulf of Finland ferry as part of the trip. Crossings take about 2 hours and are run by Tallink, Eckerö Line and Viking Line, so any operator works; compare times and fares on tallink.com and vikingline.com .
A workable plan: on day one cover Senate Square, the cathedral, Market Square, Oodi and the rock church. Day two is Suomenlinna by ferry in the morning, an art museum in the afternoon and an evening sauna at Löyly. On day three take a morning ferry to Tallinn and walk the medieval Old Town and Toompea. Day four can include Kadriorg Palace and the Kumu art museum before the return crossing. For ready-made options, you can compare Helsinki and Tallinn tours on GetYourGuide .
The Lakeland loop: Porvoo and Tampere (4 to 5 days)
Stay two nights in Helsinki, take a coach to the red-timber town of Porvoo, then continue by VR train to Tampere for two nights. Check times at vr.fi . Tampere calls itself the sauna capital of the world. Rajaportti, from 1906, is the oldest public sauna still in use (visittampere.fi ), and the city is home to the world’s only Moomin Museum, which opens Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays (muumimuseo.fi ). It sits between two large lakes, so a walk on the shore is an easy afternoon.
North to Rovaniemi
A VR night train runs from Helsinki Central Station to Rovaniemi in Lapland, with sleeper compartments priced per compartment. Departures and arrival times change by timetable, so read them on the VR site and book early. Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle, and winter brings husky and snowmobile excursions. Pack proper winter gear, and remember that daylight in northern winter is short.
Planning notes
Keep luggage light. HSL single tickets (€3.30 in the app, AB zone) cover the capital, and the airport needs an ABC ticket at €4.50 in the app or €4.80 contactless. Cards are accepted nearly everywhere. If you prefer a daily plan inside the city first, try the three-day Helsinki itinerary .
Verdict: the Tallinn pairing gives the most for the least effort, while Tampere rewards a slower pace. Tip: book the sleeper for Rovaniemi first, and fit the other nights around it.
