Day Trips from Árnafjørður via Klaksvík
Árnafjørður is a village of about 64 people with no shop or cafe, so the best day trips start from Klaksvík, about 10 minutes away by car, and use the village as a first or last stop.
The road north
From Klaksvík, drive north on route 70 through the Árnafjarðartunnilin, a tunnel about 1.96 km long that opened in 2024. About 500 m further sits the roadside pull-off with the best view of the fjord, and then the Hvannasundstunnilin, about 2.25 km long, leads on to Hvannasund and Norðdepil. The subsea tunnels are not on this road. If your day also includes roads from Tórshavn or Eysturoy, check tunnil.fo for tolls.
In Klaksvík
The Christianskirkjan was built in 1963 in an Old Norse style. The Norðoya Fornminnissavn museum covers the northern isles, and the Föroya Bjór brewery, founded in 1888, has been reported to run tours with a tasting. The swimming hall has a 25 m pool, a slide and a wellness area, which suits a wet afternoon. Opening hours change, so check before you go.
North to Hvannasund and Viðareiði
Hvannasund is about 8 km on from the village and is where the ferry to Svínoy and Fugloy leaves; check ssl.fo for times. Viðareiði is the northernmost village in the Faroes. The Villingadalsfjall hike starts there and costs DKK 200, paid into the mailbox at the gate. Enniberg needs a guide. Bus route 500 runs from Klaksvík via Hvannasund to Viðareiði, with some departures only on request an hour ahead.
Kalsoy
The route 56 ferry from Klaksvík to Syðradalur takes about 20 minutes. It is a small ferry for about 12 cars, with advance booking available, and fares are best checked on ssl.fo. Bus 506 meets the ferry at Syðradalur. The Kallur Lighthouse hike costs DKK 200 for adults and DKK 100 for ages 13 to 17, with children under 13 free, and cards are accepted at the site. In Mikladalur you will find the Kópakonan statue.

Walking in from Klaksvík
If you have a full day and good weather, the 5 km walk from Klaksvík over the Áarskarð pass to Árnafjørður takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and climbs 395 m. It is rated difficult. See the walking page for the route notes.
Tips
- Bring food, water and a warm layer, because the village has none of its own.
- Keep church parking clear on Sundays from 11:00 to 12:00.
- Ferries are small and timetables shift by season, so look at ssl.fo on the morning you travel.
- Fog and wind arrive fast in the Faroes. Dial 112 in an emergency.
