Ohrid Churches, Fortress and Ancient Theatre
Ohrid packs a Byzantine church, a Hellenistic theatre and a medieval fortress into a small hillside Old Town above the lake. The Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region is a UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed for its nature in 1979 and extended for its culture in 1980. UNESCO has repeatedly warned about illegal construction and pollution but has not placed Ohrid on the Danger list. See the property page . Fees are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro, and they vary between sources, so treat them as a guide and carry cash.
Church of St John at Kaneo
This 13th-century cross-in-square church stands above the lake and is a working Orthodox church. The grounds and the viewpoint are free, and the interior may ask about 150 MKD or a donation. Dress modestly, keep your voice low and ask before photographing inside. The Nomads Travel Guide entry has more on access.
Church of St Sophia
St Sophia is an 11th-century cathedral with Byzantine frescoes. It is now a museum and concert venue, but it is still treated with reverence. Entry is about 100 to 150 MKD, and some listings show it as free. Use no flash on the frescoes.
Plaosnik
Plaosnik is an archaeological zone with 5th-century basilica mosaics and the reconstructed church of St Clement and Panteleimon. The church is a working one, with restricted access during services. A small fee may apply, so check at the gate.
Samuel’s Fortress
The medieval walls stand on the hilltop above the Old Town, as ramparts. Entry is small, about 60 to 150 MKD. In autumn the fortress closes around 16:00 to 17:00, so go earlier in the afternoon.
The Ancient Theatre
The Hellenistic theatre dates to about 200 BC and was later used by the Romans for gladiatorial contests. Summer festival events are held on its stage. Viewing is normally free.
Icon Gallery
The Icon Gallery in the Church of the Virgin Peribleptos has its own ticket and is reported closed on Mondays. It is a good indoor alternative when the weather turns.
Respect at active churches
St John at Kaneo, St Sophia, Plaosnik and St Naum are all places of worship, even where a museum ticket is sold at the door. Keep your voice low, dress modestly, use no flash on frescoes and ask before photographing inside. Carry small notes in denars for entry fees and donations.
Hours
Off-season hours from October to March are shorter than in summer. Tourism Attractions lists general 2026 hours.
