Family Days in Sarajevo: Parks and Cable Car
Sarajevo is a compact, walkable city, but it is not built around children’s attractions. The family options that work are a cable car ride, a flat spring park, a modest city zoo and a mountain coaster, with museums for rainy days. Prices are in convertible marks (BAM), and several desks accept cash only. Treat the list as a short menu of reliable outings, not a full theme-park day.
Trebević cable car
The cable car from Bistrik to Vidikovac takes about 7 minutes and is a highlight for most children. Children under 7 ride free, and adults pay 20 BAM return or 15 BAM one-way. Hours vary by season and day, and the line closes for maintenance now and then, so check zicara.ba before you set off.
At the top there are forest paths and a playground area. Keep children on the marked paved paths. Mines from the 1990s remain in the hills and woods near former front lines, so never let children wander off the path, into woods, or into abandoned buildings. The old Olympic bobsled track is a crumbling concrete structure with drops and no railings, so it is not a good place for young children.
Vrelo Bosne
Vrelo Bosne at Ilidža is the easiest family outing. The flat tree-lined avenue is car-free, and the park has springs, wooden footbridges, ducks and swans. Reach it on tram 3 from Baščaršija in about 45 minutes, then walk, or take a horse-drawn carriage. Entry for foreign adults is 6 BAM and for foreign children aged 6 to 18 it is 3 BAM, with under-sixes free. Parking costs extra. There are no boats to hire on the water.
Sunnyland alpine coaster
Sunnyland is a 600 metre mountain coaster on the lower slopes of Trebević, opened in 2016. Riders control their own speed. The current ticket price and the extras on site are not confirmed, so ask when you arrive or check before going.
Pionirska dolina
Pionirska dolina in the Koševo area is a municipal park with playgrounds, shaded paths and a small zoo with brown bears and a modest range of other species. Entry has been reported at around 3 BAM for adults and 2.5 BAM for children. The zoo has no big cats. Animal welfare at the zoo has been criticised for years, so many families treat it as a short stop at most. Use public transport to get there.
National Museum garden
The National Museum on Zmaja od Bosne has a central botanical garden with Roman stone sarcophagi and medieval carved tombstones. Adults pay about 20 BAM and ages 6 to 18 pay 2 BAM. It is closed on Mondays. Natural history displays are on the pavilion floors.
An optional visit for older children
Older children and teenagers who ask about the 1992 to 1995 siege may be ready for the War Childhood Museum at Logavina 32, which displays toys, diaries and short memories from children of that time. It is personal rather than graphic, but it is emotional. Adults pay 15 BAM, ages 6 to 17 pay 7 BAM, and there is a family pass at about 35 BAM. Read the details on warchildhood.org first and decide in advance whether it suits your family.
Practical tips
Tram 3 is the backbone of the city. Keep an eye on pockets in crowds and carry some cash. In winter the valley can have heavy smog, and the cable car lifts you above it.
For stays close to the old town, a search such as Sarajevo family hotels shows current options.
