Multi-Day Tallinn Trips: Helsinki, Lahemaa
Multi-Day Trips From Tallinn
A longer trip from Tallinn is built from separate pieces: the capital itself, a night in or near Lahemaa, and a ferry hop to Helsinki. Each piece is simple on its own, and none needs a package.
Stay in Tallinn and branch out
For 3 to 5 days, a base in the city works best. A 3-day transit ticket costs €9 and a 5-day ticket €11, which covers trams and buses for every day trip that starts at the edge of town. The airport is on trams T2 and T4 and on bus 2, so arrival is cheap. Cards for 24, 48 and 72 hours (€45, €65 and €78) add museum entry. The Tallinn tourist office lists the full range.
Lahemaa overnight
Lahemaa National Park lies about an hour east and rewards more than a single afternoon. Viru Bog has a 3.5 km trail with a stroller-friendly boardwalk for the first 1.4 km, and the Baltic German manors at Palmse and Sagadi anchor the rest of the area. Jägala Waterfall, about 25 km east of Tallinn and outside the park, makes a free stop on the way. The park authority RMK has visitor information and local accommodation contacts.
Helsinki overnight
Three companies sail between the cities: Tallink, Viking Line and Eckerö Line. The fastest crossing, Tallink’s MyStar, takes about 2 hours, and overnight cabins are an option. Timetables and fares change by season, so choose a sailing on the operator sites, for example Viking Line . Senate Square, the Rock Church and Suomenlinna fortress fill a day.
Saaremaa
Estonia’s largest island lies to the west. The route runs by road and by ferry from Virtsu to Muhu, and the ferry company publishes current timetables and drive times. Treat it as a separate trip of its own rather than an add-on to a Tallinn weekend.
A five-day shape
Days 1 and 2 cover the Old Town, Toompea and Kadriorg. Day 3 goes east to Lahemaa. Day 4 is the Helsinki crossing, either as a long day return or an overnight. Day 5 returns to the sights you saved, such as Seaplane Harbour at €22 or KUMU at €16.
Where to stay
Central Tallinn puts the Old Town, the ferry terminal and the tram lines within reach. Compare hotels on Booking.com for your dates.
Verdict
A 4-night plan of Tallinn, one Lahemaa day and one Helsinki day is the best-supported combination. A day-by-day structure is in the 4-day Tallinn itinerary .
Tip: buy the 3-day transit ticket on your first morning and plan the outer-edge sights, such as the Open Air Museum, inside that window.
