Tallinn Day Trips: Bogs, Manors, Helsinki
Day Trips From Tallinn
Estonia is small enough that a bog boardwalk, a baroque manor and a different capital city are all reachable before dinner. Tours cover the east, coaches run to Pärnu, and the ferry terminal is the gateway to Finland.
Lahemaa National Park
Estonia’s oldest national park starts roughly an hour east, with the RMK visitor centre about 52 km from the city. The Viru Bog trail is 3.5 km long, and the first 1.4 km is a boardwalk to the viewing tower that works for strollers and wheelchairs. Rubber boots help on the wetter stretches. The park also holds the Baltic German manor houses at Palmse and Sagadi. Check RMK for trail conditions and centre hours. A guided minibus day is easier if you do not drive, and you can compare Lahemaa day tours on GetYourGuide .
Jägala Waterfall
Jägala sits about 25 km east of Tallinn, outside the national park boundary. It is about 8 m high and 50 m wide, free to visit, and works as a quick stop on the way to Lahemaa.
Helsinki by ferry
The crossing takes about 2 hours each way. Tallink’s MyStar is the fastest, Eckerö Line’s Finlandia takes around 2 hours 15, and Viking Line’s XPRS about 2.5 hours. Fares vary by date and time, so look at the operators’ sites, such as Tallink , before choosing a sailing. Senate Square, the Rock Church and the Suomenlinna fortress make a full afternoon.
Pärnu
Coaches take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Estonia’s summer resort town, known for wide sandy beaches and its spa tradition. It is a summer trip; plan on a long day if you rely on public coaches.
Rummu quarry
West of Tallinn near Vasalemma, the flooded Rummu quarry operates as a paid private beach with exhibits on its prison history. Swimming is at your own risk, with no lifeguards, and rebar and concrete lie under the water. Jumping from the ruins is dangerous. Entry details are on rummu.ee .
Narva
Narva town on the Estonian side has a castle and a riverside promenade, and makes an ordinary day out. The border crossing to Ivangorod is foot traffic only, with reduced opening hours, and is a transit point, not an attraction.
Closer to home
The Estonian Open Air Museum at Rocca al Mare is inside the city limits and fits a half day.
Verdict
Lahemaa with a stop at Jägala is the best single day trip. For a fuller schedule, see the 4-day Tallinn itinerary .
Tip: leave before 9 am and check the last return coach or ferry before you set off.
