Romantic Stays and Evenings in Muscat
Travel advisory: Oman has been affected by the 2026 conflict between the United States and Iran, so couples should read the current advice before they book a stay. At the time of writing, the UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to Oman, but it reports strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran across the region, Oman included, since 8 July, and it says terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out. The US State Department rates Oman Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, and the Yemen border area Do Not Travel. Muscat, its airport and its main attractions are operating and no strikes on the capital have been reported, though flights and airspace can be disrupted at short notice, so choose flexible bookings. See the UK FCDO advice and the US State Department advisory before you book and again before you fly.
Romance in Muscat is quiet and scenic: a long pool, a private beach, a sunset on the water, a night in a desert camp or an evening on a mountain plateau. A few local rules matter for couples. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, and it is illegal to share a hotel room if you are not married or closely related. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels and restaurants, the legal age is 21, and drinking in public is illegal. Prices are in Omani rials (OMR, about US$2.60 each).
The Chedi Muscat
The Chedi Muscat is the beach stay to look at first. The hotel highlights a 103-metre Long Pool and a private beach of about 370 m, plus a Beach Restaurant and six restaurants and lounges in all. Check the hotel website for current rooms and rates.
Barr Al Jissah resort hotels
The Barr Al Jissah resort has been managed by Hilton since 1 January 2026, and its Hilton-run hotels are Hilton Muscat Al Bandar and DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Al Waha. The older Al Husn hotel there is closed for renovation, and Al Bustan Palace is under renovation from 1 July 2026, with its restaurants and pool closed and no reopening date, so do not plan a dinner or day at either.
Sunset dhow cruise
Sunset dhow cruises leave from Marina Bandar Al Rowdha or from Muttrah. Resellers list roughly US$25 to 90 per person depending on whether hotel transfers and dinner are included, so compare what is covered. The FCDO lists the Gulf of Oman among waters with a raised risk of maritime attack and warns that tourist boats may fall short of UK safety standards, so ask for life jackets for both of you before you leave the quay.
A night in the Wahiba Sands
Desert Nights Camp, part of Canvas Club Oman, is a luxury canvas camp in the Wahiba Sands. Sellers quote very different rates, so ask the camp for a price and check that it is operating. Bidiyah is about 190 km and 2 hours from Muscat, and the last 12 to 15 km into the dunes needs a 4WD, ideally with a guide or a second vehicle.
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar
The Saiq Plateau sits at around 2,000 m, and Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, which UK sellers list as bookable in 2026, has the Diana’s Point restaurant and viewpoint. The drive is about 170 to 180 km from Muscat, and a police checkpoint above Birkat Al Mouz turns back vehicles that are not 4WD. An SUV is not automatically 4WD, so confirm with your rental company.
An evening at the Royal Opera House
A performance at the Royal Opera House Muscat is the best date-night anchor in town. The dress code is formal: suits or dinner jackets for men, and for women conservative clothes with shoulders covered and nothing above the knee. Jeans, cargo pants, t-shirts and tennis shoes are not allowed. Doors close 10 minutes before the performance and late seating is not offered, so arrive early. Photography is not allowed in the auditorium. Read the box office guidelines .
