Surat Thani Day Trips Worth the Detour
Search “Surat Thani day trips” and half the lists that come up send you to Takua Pa or Mae Phim Beach, both of which sit in entirely different provinces on the other side of the peninsula. Ignore those. Here’s what’s actually reachable in a day from Surat Thani.
Mu Ko Ang Thong, not the Andaman islands you’re thinking of
The 42-island Ang Thong archipelago runs day boats from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Donsak Pier: a stairway climb to the Talay Nai overlook, snorkeling over coral, and the option to add the 500-meter Koh Wua Talap summit hike if you’re up for it. Expect $55 to $80 per person plus the 300 THB park fee. This is the marine park in Surat Thani; it has nothing to do with Trang or Satun’s island chains further south, whatever a lazily assembled itinerary might tell you.
Cheow Lan Lake, by longtail
From Ratchaprapha Dam pier, longtail boats cross Cheow Lan Lake past the Khao Sam Kloe karst spires (the Three Brothers), with a swim stop, a raft-house lunch, and a walk into Pakarang Cave. Figure $60 to $85 for the day, cash only once you’re past the pier.
Chaiya, for the day trip nobody markets
Fifty kilometers north of Surat Thani city, Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya holds relics from the 8th-century Srivijaya empire, and the Suan Mokkh forest hermitage sits nearby. Neither gets pushed by tour operators the way the islands do, which is exactly why the crowds are thinner. Ban Phumriang’s gold-thread silk weavers are a short detour from the same road.
Koh Nang Yuan, if you’re already island-side
From Koh Tao or Samui, a speedboat to Koh Nang Yuan’s triplet islands and connecting sandbars gets you to the Japanese Gardens reef, a genuinely easy, shallow snorkel that doesn’t require a long swim.
The mistake worth naming directly
The confusion isn’t random: Takua Pa, Khao Lak, and the Trang and Satun island chains all sit within a few hours of Surat Thani by road, close enough that a badly sourced itinerary can mash them together under one provincial name. But “reachable eventually” isn’t the same as “a day trip from here,” and none of those four require crossing into another province’s tourism infrastructure the way Surat Thani’s actual four options do.
Verdict: skip anything billing itself as a Surat Thani day trip to Takua Pa, Khao Lak, or the Trang islands; those aren’t in this province, and a real Surat Thani day only has four options worth your time: Ang Thong, Cheow Lan, Chaiya, or Koh Nang Yuan.
Check which pier your boat actually departs from before booking. Listings that bundle Surat Thani with Khao Lak or Krabi routes are selling you a longer transfer than advertised. For a version of this same route stretched across a full week, see the multi-day trips guide .
