Yangon: 3 Day Trips (Access Varies)

Travel advisory: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, and the country remains in an active civil war. Most governments, including the US State Department and the UK FCDO , currently advise against travel to Myanmar, so check your own government’s latest guidance before you book anything, including overland routes outside Yangon. Favor local operators, and treat this as a list for if and when a trip is safe and ethical, not a nudge to go now.
Three real day trips work from Yangon. Two more, Golden Rock and Bagan, get pitched as day trips by tour operators and genuinely aren’t, both need an overnight and may carry extra access or safety considerations of their own, don’t let anyone sell you a same-day version.
1. Bago (Pegu)
About 91km and roughly 2 hours northeast, by hourly bus from Aung Mingalar terminal (around 3,000 kyat, verify), train, or a taxi at roughly $40-50 round trip (verify, likely stale). Bago was once the Hanthawaddy and Toungoo capital, and it packs in Shwemawdaw Pagoda (Myanmar’s tallest stupa, taller than Shwedagon, at roughly 114 meters), the 55-meter Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha from 994 CE, the reconstructed Kanbawzathadi Palace, and Kyaikpun, four Buddha images seated back to back. One known scam: some bus routes make a fake “the city’s inaccessible from here” stop about 4km out to upsell a taxi, stay on the bus.
2. Thanlyin (Syriam) and Kyauktan
Across the Yangon River via the Thanlyin Bridge, a former Portuguese trading post from around 1603 under Filipe de Brito. Kyaik Khauk Pagoda sits on a hilltop here, and the Yele Paya, a “floating pagoda” on a mid-river island near Kyauktan, is reached by a short boat crossing, verify current access and price before you commit to it, it’s a niche stop and details are thin.
3. Twante
West of the city via ferry across the 1881 Twante Canal (or the Twante Bridge by road), a delta pottery town where traditional Myanmar ceramics are still hand-thrown. It’s also a footnote in George Orwell’s biography, he served as a colonial police officer here. Shwesandaw Pagoda is the main religious stop; the pottery workshops are the real reason to come.
Onward, not day trips
Golden Rock (Kyaiktiyo) and Bagan both require an overnight and, depending on the current security picture, may carry their own access restrictions on top of the standard advisory above. Treat them as separate trips with their own planning, not an add-on to a Yangon itinerary.
