Stavanger 7 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Seven days is our 6-day itinerary (the city core, Preikestolen, the Petroleum Museum, Lysefjord and Jæren, Kjerag, and the Flørli stairs) with a seventh day for Utstein Abbey, a slower close honestly framed as Stavanger plus its wider region, not a city trip stretched to fill a week. Shorter trip? Our 5-day itinerary covers the same core without it.

Know before you go
- Pay in NOK, not euros, and expect near-cashless payment by card almost everywhere.
- Check hotel rates in Stavanger on Booking.com : a full week is worth comparing a Ryfylke-side stay against the city centre.
Day 1: Cathedral, Gamle Stavanger, Fargegaten
Morning: Stavanger Cathedral, Norway’s oldest still in use.
Afternoon: Gamle Stavanger’s roughly 173 wooden houses, the Norwegian Canning Museum.
Evening: Fargegaten, dinner near Vågen harbour.
Day 2: Preikestolen
Morning: Trailhead near Jørpeland, ~40 minutes via Ryfast.
Afternoon: Preikestolen’s 604m plateau, moderate, no fencing, ~3-4 hours round trip.
Evening: Relaxed dinner back in Stavanger.
Day 3: Petroleum Museum and Sverd i fjell
Morning: The Norwegian Petroleum Museum’s oil-capital story.
Afternoon: Sverd i fjell at Hafrsfjord, then Ledaal or Breidablikk.
Evening: A relaxed dinner or a dusk walk through Gamle Stavanger.
Day 4: Lysefjord by boat and the Jæren coast
Morning: A Lysefjord sightseeing cruise, Preikestolen visible from the water.
Afternoon: The Jæren coast and Solastranden beach near Sola.
Evening: An easy dinner, a rest day before Kjerag.
Day 5: Kjerag
Morning: Roughly a 2-hour drive to the Øygardsstølen trailhead.
Afternoon: Kjerag’s much harder trail, chain-assisted sections, 5-6 hours or more round trip.
Evening: A well-earned dinner back in Stavanger.
Day 6: Flørli’s 4,444 steps
Morning: Ferry to the roadless village of Flørli on the Lysefjord’s south shore.
Afternoon: The 4,444-step wooden staircase to the Ternevatnet reservoir, a strenuous, sustained climb.
Evening: Ferry back for a final relaxed dinner.
Day 7: Utstein Abbey
Morning: Utstein Abbey, Norway’s best-preserved medieval monastery, on the island of Klosterøy, founded under King Magnus VI (1263-1280), reachable in about 30 minutes via the Byfjord Tunnel.
Afternoon: A slower final afternoon, back through Gamle Stavanger or the fish market for any last souvenirs, rather than forcing in one more attraction.
Evening: A final unhurried dinner, closing out a full week rather than rushing the last day.
Which 7-day split actually works?
Two marquee hikes graded honestly, the Flørli stairs as a third kind of hard, the oil-capital museum, the fjord and coast, and a slower final day at Utstein Abbey is genuinely a full week of Stavanger and its region. If a week feels like too much travel, our 6-day itinerary drops Utstein Abbey and keeps everything else.
