Five days is our 4-day itinerary (the city core, Preikestolen, the Petroleum Museum, the Lysefjord and Jæren) with a fifth day for Kjerag, a genuinely harder hike, not a repeat of day two. Want the Flørli stairs too? Our 6-day itinerary adds that on top.

Know before you go
- Pay in NOK, not euros, and expect near-cashless payment by card almost everywhere.
- Kjerag closes entirely in winter and is best attempted late June-September, weather permitting.
- Check hotel rates in Stavanger : the Ryfylke fjord side cuts the daily commute for days 2 and 5 specifically.
Day 1: Cathedral, Gamle Stavanger, Fargegaten
Morning: Stavanger Cathedral, Norway’s oldest still in use, begun around 1100, finished around 1125.
Afternoon: Gamle Stavanger’s roughly 173 wooden houses and the Norwegian Canning Museum.
Evening: Fargegaten’s painted street, dinner near Vågen harbour.
Day 2: Preikestolen
Morning: Trailhead near Jørpeland, about 40 minutes via Ryfast. Start the hike early.
Afternoon: Preikestolen’s 604m plateau, moderate, no fencing, ~3-4 hours round trip.
Evening: Relaxed dinner back in Stavanger.
Day 3: Petroleum Museum and Sverd i fjell
Morning: The Norwegian Petroleum Museum, the North Sea oil story since 1969’s Ekofisk discovery.
Afternoon: Sverd i fjell at Hafrsfjord, then Ledaal or Breidablikk.
Evening: A relaxed dinner or a dusk walk through Gamle Stavanger.
Day 4: Lysefjord by boat and the Jæren coast
Morning: A Lysefjord sightseeing cruise, the full ~42km, Preikestolen visible from the water.
Afternoon: The Jæren coast and Solastranden beach near Sola, flat and sandy, no hiking gear required.
Evening: An easy final dinner, a rest day before Kjerag tomorrow.
Day 5: Kjerag
Morning: Roughly a 2-hour drive to the Øygardsstølen trailhead. Start early, this is a longer day than Preikestolen.
Afternoon: Kjerag’s meaningfully harder trail, chain-assisted sections, 5-6 hours or more round trip. The Kjeragbolten boulder sits over a 241m drop, walking onto it is optional.
Evening: Back to Stavanger for a well-earned final dinner.
Is 5 days enough for Stavanger?
Five days covers the city core, both marquee hikes graded honestly, the oil-capital museum, and the fjord and coast without cramming Preikestolen and Kjerag into the same day. If you want the Flørli stairs added, our 6-day itinerary builds on exactly this spine.
