Stavanger 4 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Day 1: Cathedral, Gamle Stavanger, Fargegaten
Morning: Stavanger Cathedral (Domkirken), Norway’s oldest cathedral still in use, begun around 1100 and finished around 1125.
Afternoon: Gamle Stavanger’s roughly 173 protected wooden houses, mostly 1820-1840, plus the Norwegian Canning Museum in the same district.
Evening: Fargegaten’s painted street, then dinner near Vågen harbour and the fish market.
Day 2: Preikestolen
Morning: Trailhead near Jørpeland, about 40 minutes via the Ryfast tunnel. Start the ~3.8km-each-way hike early.
Afternoon: Preikestolen’s 604m plateau above the Lysefjord, moderate, no fencing at the summit, ~3-4 hours round trip.
Evening: Back to Stavanger for a relaxed dinner.
Day 3: Petroleum Museum and Sverd i fjell
Morning: The Norwegian Petroleum Museum, the North Sea oil story from the 1969 Ekofisk discovery onward.
Afternoon: Sverd i fjell at Hafrsfjord, marking the 872 battle that unified Norway, then Ledaal or Breidablikk’s mansion museums.
Evening: A relaxed dinner, or a walk back through Gamle Stavanger at dusk.
Day 4: Lysefjord by boat and the Jæren coast
Morning: A sightseeing cruise covers the Lysefjord’s full ~42km length, cliffs and waterfalls, with Preikestolen visible from below for anyone who skipped the hike.
Afternoon: The Jæren coast, roughly 5km south, an unusually straight, flat, sandy stretch, a real contrast to the fjord terrain. Solastranden beach near Sola is a known windsurfing spot.
Evening: A final relaxed dinner back in Stavanger.
