Stavanger: Where To Stay By Area

Stavanger is compact enough that most areas put you within a reasonable walk of the centre, so the real choice is what your trip actually needs, city walkability, atmosphere, an easy airport run, or a shorter drive to the trailheads.
Four zones ranked
| Zone | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| City centre / Vågen harbour | Walkable, central, the obvious base | First-timers who want everything on foot |
| Gamle Stavanger | Atmospheric wooden-house quarter | A quieter stay inside the postcard scenery |
| Sola / near the airport | Practical, beach-adjacent | Early flights, the Jæren beaches |
| Jørpeland / Ryfylke fjord side | Hiking-first, closer to the trailhead | Trips built around Preikestolen or Kjerag |
City centre and Vågen harbour, the obvious base
The area around Vågen harbour and the cathedral puts the fish market, Gamle Stavanger, Fargegaten, and most restaurants within an easy walk, and Stavanger’s train station sits centrally here too. It’s the default first-visit choice for a reason, everything on the main sightseeing list is close.
Gamle Stavanger, for atmosphere over convenience
Staying inside Gamle Stavanger itself, among the roughly 173 protected white wooden houses on the west side of the harbour, trades a few extra minutes’ walk into the centre for evenings inside the actual postcard scenery once the day-trip crowds have thinned. It’s still an easy walk from Vågen.
Sola and the airport, for early flights and the beach
Basing near Sola, home to Stavanger Airport, makes sense for early departures or if the Jæren coast and Solastranden beach, roughly 5km from the centre, are a bigger part of the trip than the historic core. It trades city-centre convenience for airport ease and easy beach access.
Jørpeland and the Ryfylke side, for a hiking-first trip
If Preikestolen or Kjerag is the actual point of the trip, basing on the Ryfylke fjord side near Jørpeland cuts out the daily commute from central Stavanger to the trailheads, roughly 40 minutes each way via the Ryfast tunnel from the city. It’s the practical choice for a trip built around the hikes rather than the city itself.
Picking by trip type, not habit
Choose Vågen harbour if walkability outweighs everything else, Gamle Stavanger for a quieter and more atmospheric stay, Sola if flights or the beaches matter more than the historic core, and Jørpeland or the Ryfylke side if the hikes are the actual reason you’re here. Check current rates in Stavanger on Booking.com across two or three of these before assuming the centre is the only option.
For the wider trip plan around wherever you land, see the Stavanger guide and where to eat , which pairs well with a Vågen or Gamle Stavanger base specifically.
One concrete move: if this is a first trip and Preikestolen is the only hike on your list, stay in the city centre anyway and treat the 40-minute drive to the trailhead as a single early morning rather than basing yourself out in Ryfylke for the whole stay.
