- Check hotel rates in Stavanger : Vågen harbour is the walkable base for day one.
Day 1: Cathedral, Gamle Stavanger, Fargegaten
Morning: Stavanger Cathedral (Domkirken), begun around 1100 and finished around 1125, the year the city dates its own founding to, Norway’s oldest cathedral still in use. A Romanesque nave meets a Gothic choir added after a 1272 fire.
Afternoon: Gamle Stavanger, roughly 173 protected white wooden houses, mostly built 1820-1840, widely described as Northern Europe’s best-preserved wooden townscape. The Norwegian Canning Museum sits inside the same district if you want the sardine-heritage story.
Evening: Fargegaten (Øvre Holmegate), the painted colour street, then dinner near Vågen harbour, a full seafood meal from the fish market stalls is a genuinely reliable choice.
Day 2: Preikestolen
Morning: Drive or take a seasonal bus to the Preikestolhytta trailhead near Jørpeland, about 40 minutes via the Ryfast subsea tunnel. Start the ~3.8km-each-way hike early to beat the midday crowds.
Afternoon: Reach Preikestolen’s 604m plateau above the Lysefjord, moderate but steep and rocky in stretches, no fencing at the summit, so treat the edge with real caution. Round trip runs ~3-4 hours at a moderate pace.
Evening: Back to Stavanger for a relaxed final dinner, you’ve earned it after roughly 7.6km of hiking.
Is 2 days enough for Stavanger?
Two days covers the walkable city core plus one honest hike, Preikestolen, without rushing either. If you want Kjerag, the Petroleum Museum, or the Jæren beaches added, our 4-day itinerary builds on exactly this spine.
