Oman Road Trip: 7 Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions this trip doesn’t touch, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat and the interior have not been hit and are operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.
Seven days is the definitive version of this loop: Oman has no useful intercity rail, so this is a self-drive trip start to finish, and it’s genuinely the first itinerary length that fits both signature mountains without rushing either one.
Day 1: Nizwa
Drive from Muscat to Nizwa (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Nizwa Fort (around 5 OMR) and the adjoining Nizwa Souq are the main draws; on a Friday the goat market runs roughly 06:30 to 09:30. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 2: Bahla, Jabrin, and Al Hamra
Bahla Fort (Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort) and Jabrin Castle, with its painted ceilings, in the morning; Al Hamra and the mudbrick village of Misfat al Abriyeen, built above still-working falaj irrigation channels, in the afternoon. Overnight in Al Hamra or back in Nizwa.
Day 3: Jebel Akhdar
Drive up to Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain: a checkpoint at the base enforces 4x4-only, regular rental sedans are turned away. The Saiq Plateau at around 2,000 metres has rose-terraced villages (best in the rose season, late March to May) and viewpoints like Diana’s Point. Overnight on the plateau.
Day 4: Jebel Shams
Down from Jebel Akhdar and up a separate access road to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak at roughly 3,009 metres, don’t conflate the two mountains, they’re distinct ranges with distinct roads. A 4x4 is needed again for the final stretch. The “Grand Canyon of Arabia” rim and the Balcony Walk (W6), an exposed roughly 8km round trip, are the payoff. Drive down toward the desert in the afternoon.
Day 5: Wahiba Sands
Continue to Wahiba Sands (Sharqiya Sands); the highway is 2WD, but the dunes need a 4x4 camp transfer. Desert camp overnight, with dune driving, a camel ride, and dark-sky stargazing.
Day 6: Wadi Bani Khalid and Sur
Break up the drive at Wadi Bani Khalid, spring-fed pools reached by an easy, short paved walk. Continue to Sur, one of the region’s historic dhow-building towns, still building wooden vessels by hand. In the evening, head to Ras al-Jinz, about 45 minutes further, for a strictly guided turtle-viewing session, book ahead, groups are permitted and capped. Overnight at the reserve for both the evening and dawn sessions.
Day 7: Coast Road Back to Muscat
Head back via the coast: Wadi Shab for a swim into its cave waterfall, Bimmah Sinkhole for a quick dip, and Fins Beach if there’s time. This loop deliberately skips Salalah and Musandam, both are separate trips (Salalah is a fly-in region, not a road add-on; Musandam isn’t reachable by direct road from Muscat), and both have been directly hit in the current conflict, so treat them as a future trip once the situation settles rather than an extension of this one.
