Oman Road Trip: 4 Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions this trip doesn’t touch, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat and the interior have not been hit and are operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.
Four days is the first version of this loop with real room to breathe: Nizwa’s interior, one signature mountain, and a night in the Wahiba dunes, closed out with a wadi swim on the way back. Rent a car from Day 1; Oman has no useful intercity rail, and this route genuinely needs a 4x4 for two of its stops.
Day 1: Nizwa
Drive from Muscat to Nizwa (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Nizwa Fort (around 5 OMR) and the adjoining Nizwa Souq are the main draws; on a Friday the goat market runs roughly 06:30 to 09:30. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 2: Bahla, Jabrin, and Jebel Shams
Morning at Bahla Fort (Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort) and Jabrin Castle, with its painted ceilings. Afternoon drive up to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak at roughly 3,009 metres and a separate mountain from Jebel Akhdar, don’t conflate the two. The final stretch needs a 4x4. The payoff is the “Grand Canyon of Arabia,” the rim of Wadi Ghul dropping about 1,000 metres, and the Balcony Walk (W6), an exposed roughly 8km round-trip ledge trail with real drop-offs, not for anyone uneasy with heights. Overnight near the mountain.
Day 3: Wahiba Sands
Drive to Wahiba Sands (Sharqiya Sands), the highway is 2WD but the dunes themselves are 4x4-only, reached via a camp transfer. Spend the evening at a desert camp: dune driving, a camel ride, and dark-sky stargazing. This is an overnight, not a day-trip stop.
Day 4: Wadi Bani Khalid and Back to Muscat
Break up the drive back at Wadi Bani Khalid, big spring-fed pools reached by a short, easy paved walk, a better no-hike option than Wadi Shab if you’d rather not scramble. Continue to Muscat, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from the wadi, for your onward flight.
