Oman Road Trip: 5 Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions this trip doesn’t touch, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat and the interior have not been hit and are operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.
Five days extends the 4-day loop east to Sur and the Ras al-Jinz turtle reserve, a genuinely different landscape from the mountains and dunes earlier in the trip. Rent a car from Day 1; this route needs a 4x4 for Jebel Shams and the Wahiba dunes specifically.
Day 1: Nizwa
Drive from Muscat to Nizwa (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Nizwa Fort (around 5 OMR) and the adjoining Nizwa Souq are the main draws; on a Friday the goat market runs roughly 06:30 to 09:30. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 2: Bahla, Jabrin, and Jebel Shams
Morning at Bahla Fort (Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort) and Jabrin Castle. Afternoon drive to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak at roughly 3,009 metres, a 4x4 for the final stretch. The “Grand Canyon of Arabia” rim view and the Balcony Walk (W6) are the payoff, an exposed roughly 8km round trip with real drop-offs. Overnight near the mountain.
Day 3: Wahiba Sands
Drive down to Wahiba Sands (Sharqiya Sands); the dunes themselves need a 4x4 camp transfer even though the highway in is 2WD. Desert camp overnight, with dune driving, a camel ride, and dark-sky stargazing.
Day 4: Wadi Bani Khalid and Sur
Break up the drive with Wadi Bani Khalid, spring-fed pools reached by an easy, short paved walk. Continue to Sur, historically one of the region’s great dhow-building towns; the working yards still build wooden vessels by hand. Overnight in Sur.
Day 5: Ras al-Jinz Turtles and Back to Muscat
Ras al-Jinz is a strictly guided reserve, book the night or dawn session ahead of time, groups are permitted and capped, and there’s no wandering the beach on your own. If you can only fit one session in given the drive back, the dawn viewing tends to work better with a same-day departure. Drive back to Muscat afterward, roughly 3 hours from Ras al-Jinz.

The honest verdict: five days is ambitious but doable, the mountain, the dunes, and the turtles genuinely earn the pace if you’re comfortable with long driving days.
