Oman Road Trip: 3 Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions this trip doesn’t touch, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat and the interior have not been hit and are operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.
Three days extends the 2-day interior loop with a night in the desert, one region at a manageable pace rather than trying to cram in the mountains too. Rent a car from Day 1; Oman has no useful intercity rail.
Day 1: Nizwa
Drive from Muscat to Nizwa (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Nizwa Fort (around 5 OMR) is the big round tower at the town’s center; the adjoining Nizwa Souq sells silver, dates, and khanjar daggers. On a Friday, the goat market runs roughly 06:30 to 09:30. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 2: Bahla, Jabrin, and Wahiba Sands
Morning at Bahla Fort (Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort) and Jabrin Castle, known for its painted ceilings. From there, drive to Wahiba Sands (also called Sharqiya Sands), roughly 2 to 2.5 hours; the highway itself is 2WD, but the dunes are 4x4-only, reached via a camp transfer, not something to attempt in a standard rental. Spend the evening at a desert camp with dune driving, a camel ride, and genuinely dark skies for stargazing. This is an overnight stop, not a stop you can squeeze into an afternoon.
Day 3: Desert Morning and Back to Muscat
An early dune drive or camel ride before the heat builds, then the drive back to Muscat, roughly 3 hours depending on which route you take back through the interior. Budget the full morning for the desert before committing to the drive; rushing the return cuts into the one experience this day trip is built around.

The honest verdict: three days works if you accept a genuinely full second day, the desert camp alone is worth the compressed pace.
